How would you rate the first Doctor? For me I give him an 8, he has such a wonderful presence on screen, my only gripe would be the minor occasions when he was a little too crotchety. Other wise he was brilliant.

I gave him 7 out of 10. Although I like some of his stories I'm a little bit unsure as to some others, e.g 'The Web Planet'.

Sorry but the 1st doctor suceeds only to irritate me. He never actually did anything apart from be grumpy and remind us all how clever he was. My least favourite.

This really developed as he went on, more so after Susan left, as Barbara and Ian note in 'The Rescue'

I'd personally mark down the 1st Doctor's highpoint as 'The War Machines' whilst in my opinion his low point would be 'The Rescue': there the scene of Vicki joining the TARDIS was especially tacky and cheesy (SHUDDER! ). 'The Crusade' was another good one too.

4/10.
Sorry, but I've never really got on with him. Hartnell was a good actor but I find his take on the Doctor a little too grumpy for my tastes. I've grown up with actors who played the Doctor as eccentric and a little mad (IMO) but grumpy old grandpa didn't interest me.

Seeing some comments from above I think the 1st Doctor is hideously underrated by some. I think this is due to underexposure, that being caused by a some of his episodes having been wiped, especially in Season Three. I think he deserves a bit more credit than he gets like Colin Baker's Doctor.
Anyway I think his grumpiness comes from years and years of living and that he was eccentric from the beginning but as the years went on he shrugged off that pretense and became a bit more acerbic in some respects.

8/10
I like him a lot. His abrasive manner and often manipulative ways must have been quite a unique thing in its day: a hero with very few admirable qualities. As far as I'm concerned, though, this made him all the more interesting.
I'm afraid he doesn't get a 10 because I've reserved that for my fave Doctor ;D

I think that Hartnell was at his shining best in 'The War Machines'.

I thought the 1st Doctor was wise but abit of a grubby ole bugger at times!! Made some great stories 'The time Meddler' and some boring/ childish ones like 'The web Planet'(also love the special efects in this story ) ;D so 7 out of 10 for me!

I chose 6/10 because his stories had a large range from good to bad and also he wasn't as agile as was possibly neccisary. Also I didn't much like his patronising attitude of sorts.

I personally think his performance in 'The Time Meddler' was good. Especially the scene with him and Steven early on in part one.
