The reasons why this episode was good are all related to its ability to work on emotions and draw on the shared experiences of its characters (and the audience's investment in those experiences). The reason why it wasn't great are due to a series of scientific premises which seem to bend to suit the storyline and a certain playing fast-and-loose with some established behaviours and abilities in the characters. (Don't want to get into this too much in case there are people who haven't seen it yet reading this). The reason why it was nearly great was the way it treated Davros, which showed an awareness of the Daleks and the show's history that bordered on genius. Acting, special effects and editing were all as splendid as ever.

okay what was that? Rushed rushed rushed. It's not like an episode at all but like an event ...with really ridiculous things happening. Hum, why did the Daleks need to go down to Earth in the first place? They had a reality destroyer, did they really invade the whole earth just to get some prisoners to test it? Donna getting the Doc's DNA mind: sad ending really and really really stupid at first, badly played by all involved but a nice idea but badlly handled and directed. It was all for laughs and too, too fast. The Doc splitting: cop out and stupid and unneeded. I spotted the ending to the Rose story a mile away when the Doc split. I'm glad Luke didn't die and glad in fact that no one really died but sad that Donna is no longer a companion: she was the best of the new series. There were some great lines and Davros was pretty good here but the rest was like a giant cartoon. Oh and nice plan Sarah Jane: getting captured. Great plan. RTD, like the old series I guess pulls machinery and plot solvers out of his butt but I guess that's like the old Docs used to be. This was really not as bad as I thought itwas going to be but it could have been so much better. Okay let's move the Earth back into place. Just a bunch of set pieces and some nice lines and quotes. Pretty awful realy.

Voted good. Yes, it's on YouTube already. I was expecting something more edge-of-your-seat. I knew the hand was going to play a part somewhere. When the Doctor split I thought, "What the heck?!" The Doctor had said that Rose could spend the rest of her life with him but he couldn't spend the rest of his life with her. ( School Reunion) Seems the only way he could was to become half-human. Two Doctors, and they're both the 10th doctor. Weird! Couldn't the Doctor have wiped out Donna's memory of having his DNA in her mind? Now she doesn't remember ever meeting him! No fair! That stinks! But now I understand what was meant by a companion dying.

It seems odd that the Daleks were apparently scouring the globe for prisoners when all we saw was a handful getting their atome dissipated. Perhaps they were taking others for unspecified future use while there was still anybody around to capture, though with time travel at their disposal I guess they could always hop back in time if they needed victims, guinea pigs and labourers.
The Donna bit was a little like Jamie getting his memories wiped (perhaps deliberate homage) and effectively handled. Not all of it made sense, of course and just saying that a human/Time Lord combo could do all that to the Daleks wasn't convincing - yes it was played for laughs but that's what I mean about it being more concerned with the emotional response rather than logical storytelling. At least they didn't push a reset button, though how mankind is meant to go back to normal after that experience I'm not sure.
The problem with the ever-bigger finales is that it makes it harder to believe that we're dealing with anything like our own people and planet. If I had Cybermen fighting Daleks one year, a few days in a different galaxy AND a Dalek invasion the next (never mind alien spaceships over London every Christmas) I don't think going to work, recycling my old newspapers and supporting my local football team would ever be important again.

I thought the finale was pretty tops. Sure it was disjointed in places but so what, the whole thing was a great rollercoaster ride from start to finish.
A great ending to RTD's time on the show. Looking forward to what we get next.

IS RTD really done? I thought he was doing the specials? I hope not. Oh thank God if he's done on DW.

He's back for the specials in 2009 (how many I do not know but I presume most if not all of them (and there are four in total I believe, excluding the 2008 Christmas Special)).

I know this is off the subject, but the TARDIS in my avatar is supposed to be spinning. Not doing it now. Anyone know why this might be?

I enjoyed the ep but feel that it was unfair how donna was treated at the end. Like having to go back to being unhappy and forget all the things she's done and seen all the things that made the donna we know and love.
I wish they kept her for another season or at least give her a better send off cause really she was a great companion, Rose and Martha where good but really the same person different actress where donna was the most human who reacted as most people would.
So what do u all think should donna return somehow or at least get a better send off??

Yes I do! I think she deserves better. Bring her back somehow! I know the Doctor said she would "burn up" if she remembered, but maybe there's a way around that. Donna became a better person traveling with him. With all the knowledge she gained, she obviously knew what the Doctor was going to do. When she was talking real fast, it reminded me of the way she does "Lauren Cooper". ;D

Well they did find away to bring rose back when she left even though the doctor said it was impossible but then again RTD plan that...

Does anyone know the title of the music that was playing at the beginning of this clip? www.youtube.com/watch?v=xrxpN6BpfLE I love it! I don't know if it was the music itself or because it was playing during the scene with the celebration of Earth's return on the news, but it made me cry when I watched it the 2nd time. This was a really unique episode with so many previous companions all on the Tardis. Would Jackie count as a companion?

I believe it's an original piece by Murray Gold - and as far as I know it doesn't have an official name. If you listen carefully it's a variation of the Ood song for freedom from 'Planet of the Ood'. With any luck it'll be on the Series 34 Soundtrack CD.
