2023 Christmas Special and it is the first Christmas Special since 2017's Twice Upon A Time. In the meantime there were New Year's Day Specials instead.
Written by showrunner Russell T. Davies.
Ncuti Gatwa's full debut as the Fifteenth Doctor and Millie Gibson's debut as new companion Ruby Sunday and like new long-term companions introduced by Davies she gets referenced either by herself or with the Doctor in the episode title for her debut.
Guest stars Davina McCall as herself.
McCall previously voiced the Davinadroid in Bad Wolf also written by Davies.
This episode starts with a mysterious woman, whose face the viewer do not see leaving a baby at a church and this woman then walks away from the baby.
The Doctor is seen present in this event.
The baby is eventually named Ruby Sunday, Ruby being named after Ruby Road which is where she was found at that church.
The name Sunday comes from her adoptive mother Carla who had previously fostered her.
After the title sequence, Ruby now a young woman is interviewed by Davina McCall as Ruby hopes this would help in her search for her birth parents.
The mystery of Ruby's parents deepens when Davina later called Ruby to tell her that she could not find any trace of them.
It is established that Ruby was left on Ruby Road on a Christmas Day and was born on the previous day Christmas Eve.
Most of the events of this episode took place in 2023 in the Christmas period and Christmas Eve 2023, Ruby's birthday is on a Sunday and somehow, given Ruby's surname, I doubt this was in anyway coincidental on RTD's part.
It had been revealed ahead of time to the viewer, the menace of this episode being that of goblins with them singing a song which I will get back to later on.
In the studio where Ruby is interviewed by Davina McCall, a goblin deliberately causes an accident. This is the first of many, accidents caused by the goblins that happened throughout this episode.
Among the accidents is Davina getting a broken leg and on a wheelchair and then a Christmas tree falling on her. For a moment there this viewer wondered if RTD had killed off a real person in a fictional way.as it then cutaway afterwards without showing whether the tree had landed on her.
In the midst of all this, the Sundays received the arrival of a new baby Lulubelle for Carla to foster.
On the subject of the Sundays, Carla's mother and Ruby's grandmother who is living with them is called Cherry.
This makes her name Cherry Sunday and as noted by the Doctor this sounds like a dessert as it is the same pronunciation with cherry sundae.
I should get a cherry sundae on at least one subsequent rewatch of this episode.
Carla goes out and left Ruby to look after Lulubelle.
It is then that Lulubelle gets taken by the goblins and Ruby runs off to get Lulubelle back.
With this chase in progress, the goblins hissed at Ruby leading her to asked them of whether they had hissed at her.
This reminded me of Amy asking Malohkeh whether he had shushed her in The Hungry Earth.
In the midst of this chase, Ruby properly gets introduced to the Doctor, as they had briefly met before.
It is here the Doctor introduced his intelligent gloves and what it does.
The Doctor and Ruby soon tracked down the goblins and Lulubelle and this is the moment when the goblins sang their song.
Quite catchy this song and the Doctor and Ruby soon sang to this situation at hand.
The Doctor and Ruby got Lulubelle back but the Doctor soon noticed that Ruby is missing with Carla having no memory of her.
The Doctor realises the goblins went back in time and took Ruby as a baby.
The Doctor quickly rushes off to the TARDIS and the TARDIS dematerialising got witnessed by Mrs Flood, Ruby's neighbour.
This has sparked speculations among fans of just who is exactly Mrs Flood and why did RTD have her witnessing the TARDIS dematerialising.
The episode cuts back to what was shown at the beginning and that of the Doctor at Ruby Road and him witnessing the mysterious figure dropping baby Ruby at the church.
Enjoyable resolution to this situation at Ruby Road with the Doctor foiling the goblins' schemes and saving baby Ruby.
The Doctor returns to the present and finds the grown up Ruby back to where she belongs and also saving Davina from being killed by a Christmas tree. Come to think of it this reminded me of the Tylers and Mickey being attacked by a Christmas tree in the Tenth Doctor's own full debut The Christmas Invasion also written by RTD.
The episode ends with Ruby, with encouragement from Mrs Flood raising a curiousity with this character, getting in the TARDIS.
Having seen the inside the TARDIS, Ruby goes around in amazement on the outside of the TARDIS and not the first companion to have done this.
15 and Ruby are therefore off to adventures anew.
Surprising the end credits is interrupted by a mid-credit scene which ends with Mrs Flood breaking the fourth wall telling the viewer of having you never seen the TARDIS before!
A solid debut for 15 and Ruby.
