The Face of the Enemy is a novel from the BBC Past Doctor Adventures range. Written by David A. McIntee and released on January 5 1998. Featuring the Delgado Master and UNIT, this is a Doctor-less adventure as this is set currently to when the Third Doctor and Jo were in The Curse of Peladon. Also featuring First Doctor companions Ian and Barbara who are now married and they don't get to meet the Third Doctor given The Curse of Peladon. The Brigadier reluctantly recruits the help of the Master who is now in prison due to events of The Daemons to deal with the problem of underworld gangs whilst also the employing the help of Ian and Barbara. Also turning up is Harry Sullivan a time before he met and travelled with the Doctor when he later became the Fourth Doctor. This story also ultimately involves the parallel Earth from Inferno and the Master's counterpart there Koschei and it is not coincidental that McIntee had written for Koschei before as the Master was known in his Missing Adventure novel The Dark Path. Admittedly Face of the Enemy is an overload with fan service by presenting the elements from the TV series and putting it together here. However it does present an interesting premise of having the Master as the lead character, in the absence of the Doctor, and imagining what Ian and Barbara would have been like during the Third Doctor era even though they didn't meet the Third Doctor and this plus having Harry before he met the Doctor.
