2022 New Year's Day Special.
Written by showrunner Chris Chibnall.
Doctor Who directorial debut by Annetta Laufer.
Having known beforehand that this would have the Daleks (of course), the main cast of Jodie Whittaker, Mandip Gill and John Bishop and guest stars Aisling Bea (Sarah) and Adjani Salmon (Nick), I was surprised that turning up as Sarah's mum Mary and only on the phone is Pauline McLynn, someone I have seen before in other places.
McLynn was not the only surprise casting I found with this episode which I will get to later on.
Eve of the Daleks was made known in the lead-up to it as that of a time-loop story.
If the fact that this is a time loop story hadn't been made beforehand I would have been surprised on seeing Sarah and Nick suddenly alive again as they just got exterminated by a Dalek.
Also got exterminated were the Doctor, Yaz and Dan and every time the five of them gets exterminated this starts a new time loop and they remembered having been exterminated.
It is called Eve of the Daleks because it is set in the last minutes of New Year's Eve and with each new time loop it is starts a minute later than before.
Love it that in reference to two birds with one stone, the Doctor came up with two Daleks with one phone.
Aisling Bea as Sarah is definitely fun as she expressed her incredulousness with what is happening.
Impressive when each of them said deal as they are resolved on what they had to do.
The time loop is ultimately closed when the Daleks gets tricked in blowing up the storage unit with them in it as they shoot at fireworks.
With remarkable precision of timing the said fireworks are set off just as the New Year has arrived.
Watching these fireworks elsewhere is Karl from The Woman Who Fell To Earth with Jonny Dixon reprising him.
Either there is a significance of Karl being here or Dixon happened to be in the area and Chibnall decided to write him in on this.
Eve of the Daleks is a very good and a very fun time loop story.
The Coming Soon trailer also came as a surprise as it slowly revealed the name of the next Special, Legend of the Sea Devils with a Sea Devil turning up at the end of this!
