Okay, RTD strikes again. Really, he should stop writing DW and just I dunno either move on or let others write them. His dialog and his slapstick is not funny but he seems to think it is. The charaterization is okay at best, stupficial at worst and somewhat forced. THe plot is bare and frankly offensive, I'm sick of the whole in love iwth the Doctor thing, and the big bad alien plot against the world...it's boring already and it spans all three shows now, Torchwood, Sarah Blah Smith, and this junk. THe monsters were not threatening at all and it's basically the same story over and over, Rose, Smith and JOnes, this and whatever. It's not as bad as New Earth but not as good as Smith and Jones, however I hope it gets better. Reall pretty average to poor. DOnna is good though for the most part. The whole Rose thing: I think they should have left it alone and left her in her own world /unvierse...this too smacks of a gimmick, reaching for something that was good and left well enough aelone in DD. Please, there's been gimmicks before and arcs before but this seems wrong somehow and I love how Rose doens't do what Donna asked her to do...typical. I also guess Rose didn't make a life for herself...she looks so sad.

What on Earth are you on about, Chuck? You seem to be getting awfully worked up about a rather slight (admittedly) but undoubtedly entertaining episode. RTD went for a comedy episode to start with and it was a little contrived that the Doctor and Donna kept missing each other (but my kids loved that and they are the target audience, as I keep reminding you) but that hardly makes him a poor writer. Donna was good throughout and the idea of getting Tate (with her 'shouty' reputation) to greet the Doctor in enforced silence was a good joke. But that's the point: a new series and some new viewers on board, a new companion, start light and frothy and draw people in. Obviously there are darker days ahead with bigger and badder beasts and a story arc that will involve Rose, but that's a good thing, isn't it? And no, the monsters weren't threatening, they weren't meant to be, they were alien babies made of fat, and were cute. (Dont mention Tribbles here, either.) And Donna isn't in love with the Doctor, as she spelled out very clearly. She's after his TARDIS and the escape from mundanity it provides. Aren't we all? As a series opener it wasn't as good as Smith and Jones or Rose, but it was still good, apart from some strangely poor special effects near the end. This was Saturday teatime kids telly, perfect family viewing. Didn't care for the new arrangement of the tune though, but you can't have everything.

I enjoyed the episode. It was funny, bizarre and yeah, the missing each other bit dragged on too long, but it was a good first episode to get the family warmed up and ready for a new series of Doctor Who.
Those of us who remember the original series probably won't enjoy it as much as we did the old, but that shouldn't stop us enjoying it for a 45 minute slot of fun, wacky sci-fi goodness.

<<<but that hardly makes him a poor writer>>>>>>>>.
Yeah, for me, it kinda does.
<<<to greet the Doctor in enforced silence was a good joke.>>>>
No, it kinda wasn't. It just makes her and the Doctor look overly stupid as they are having this in full view of the villains who can KILL them!!! Again, bad writing.
<<<But that's the point: a new series and some new viewers on board, a new companion, start light and frothy and draw people in.>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
To me a light hearted ep and a comedy ep is fine but this wasn't funny, it wasn't even really light hearted (villain dies by fallng down, Stacy dies) and cute little monster kids are just really from a race of selfish creeps.
<<< Obviously there are darker days ahead with bigger and badder beasts and a story arc that will involve Rose, but that's a good thing, isn't it?>>>>>>>>>>>>>
NO, the Rose thing, we shall have to see but right now it smacks of desperation and going back to a story and a chracter that left in a grand finale (which was excellent and perhaps the greatest DW story ever told). Just how it will play out is to come so I'll with hold judgement on future tales however this scene smacks of just...tune in next time to find out if we give you more Rose snippets. She's coming back!!!! Big deal.
<<<<And Donna isn't in love with the Doctor, as she spelled out very clearly. She's after his TARDIS and the escape from mundanity it provides. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>
THis was not obvious from what she tells her grand dad. "I let him get away..."
Yeah, but wouldn't it have been nice if Donna had made something of her life rather than acting like a big time loser like Rose and Sarah Jane?
<<<As a series opener it wasn't as good as Smith and Jones or Rose, but it was still good, apart from some strangely poor special effects near the end. This was Saturday teatime kids telly, perfect family viewing.>>>>>>>>>>>>
Yeah, kiddie schlock comes to mind.
<<< Didn't care for the new arrangement of the tune though, but you can't have everything. >>>>>>
I feel it needed a change and am okay with that. I do think they need to tap someone else to do some music. I love Murray Gold but a bit of a change at times would help.

There's already a discussion thread for this in the "Current Series" section, so I'm closing this one.
