Neala Johnson previewed Extremis on Sunday May 21 for the Sydney Sunday Telegraph tv guide of May 21-27 2017: “Peter Capaldi has been polarising as the Twelfth Doctor, but six episode into this season there’s no denying it’s been the best in years. With new companion Bill Potts (Pearl Mackie) breathing fresh life into proceedings, the show has rediscovered how to be sassy and fun. Tonight’s episode Extremis, is said to kick off a three-part story arc.”

Written by showrunner Steven Moffat. The first of three loosely connected episodes known as The Monks Trilogy as this episode sees the introduction of the said monks. The Doctor uses his shades to help out with his blindness and that rather reminded me of Geordie using his VISOR to help out with his blindness in Star Trek: The Next Generation. Fascinating seeing flashbacks with the Doctor and Missy at the latter’s execution as it goes back and forth with the Doctor’s present time. Due to her temporary stay in the house in Knock Knock, I had forgotten that Bill was living with Moira as the latter makes another appearance here. Funny that Moira does not seem to know that Bill is not into men. Funny seeing the Pope in the TARDIS. The Pope is played by Joseph Long and got reminded in Whovians that Long had been in Doctor Who before playing Rocco Colasanto in Turn Left. It has been pointed out to me that both characters that Long had played were in alternative realities that would later have a profound effect on the Doctor. Surprised on seeing River’s diary in the flashbacks and that it was read here by Nardole. When they were in the secret library in the Vatican, it was amusing Bill says in Cardinal Angelo’s presence, Harry Potter and the Doctor says language. With the presence of this library and due to what would be revealed later on it makes the episode all the more similar to Moffat’s earlier Library story in 2008. I was surprised that Bill did not know what CERN was which she and Nardole would later go to. Incidentally CERN was the focus of the Torchwood radio play Lost Souls in 2008. At CERN in Extremis quite eerie when Bill and Nardole says the same numbers at the same time. Surprised on seeing the Pentagon with Bill and Nardole there. However it would soon be revealed that the Pentagon, CERN and everything else are simulations with Nardole saying that it is like the holodeck in Star Trek. This is the second episode in a row in which Star Trek gets referenced after the Doctor stating the final frontier line at the beginning of the previous episode Oxygen. Star Trek fans should be so honoured. Shocking that this Nardole is revealed to be a simulation himself. Bill goes to the simulated White House to see the Doctor there. The Eleventh Doctor had been in the real White House and met President Nixon in The Impossible Astronaut/Day of the Moon also written by Moffat. We do not see properly the face of the apparently dead President in the simulated White House but I get the feeling that he was meant to be in the form of Nixon. The Impossible Astronaut/Day of the Moon is a story that featured my wife Karen Gillan as Amy Pond and the Twelfth Doctor in the simulated White House says that the simulation is like Super Mario. Incidentally I had seen in an article my wife Karen cosplaying as Mario and looked very cute wearing this costume. The Bill that we have seen for most of this episode turns out to be a simulation and somewhat off-putting seeing the real Bill at the ending when the simulation was over. Missy does not get executed with the Doctor saying that he had promised to guard her body for a thousand years but did not say it was going to be her dead body. Good wording of this promise. It is at the end that the Doctor stated that Missy is in the Vault but director Daniel Nettheim speaking in Whovians says that it is not as conclusive as that. Whether Missy is truly in the Vault it is incidental to note that the Geoffrey Beevers Master had been in another place called the Vault in Mastermind from Big Finish.

Extremis has Bill bringing back to her place Penny with Penny thinking that Bill had moved out of this place.
Bill said that she did but it didn't work out, a reference to what happened to two episodes earlier Knock Knock, and that a second attempt is on its way.
Penny then went into the toilet leaving Bill alone but was surprised when Moira turned up.
Bill had thought Moira was out with someone called Harry but Moira says that his name is Howard.
It seems that Bill's earlier conversation with Penny made her think of that house in Knock Knock and it is probable Bill erroneously said the name Harry because Harry is the name of one her brief housemates in Knock Knock.
I think this is especially probable when this turned out to be a simulation, a program that presents a reference triggered by what someone had just said.
