The episode title would no doubt make long time Doctor Who fans think about The Happiness Patrol and watching Smile myself it does feel like it is running on similar lines. Playing Goodthing is Mina Anwar and she is already familiar to Whoniverse fans as she had played Rani’s mother Gita Chandra in The Sarah Jane Adventures. As Smile takes place in the far future perhaps Goodthing is a descendant of Gita. Unfortunately Goodthing does not survive beyond the teaser as she gets kill off. Other guest stars in this episode include Ralf Little who had denied in a Doctor Who video that he was going to be in Doctor Who. In fact I saw both Anwar and Little in The A Word last year. Funny on Bill’s reactions to the Doctor having two hearts. Bill asked about whether there is a Scotland in space. Smile is Pearl Mackie’s second episode as Bill and incidentally my wife Karen Gillan’s second episode as Amy is The Beast Below which had featured the Starship UK but minus Scotland which had their own spaceship. In fact the Doctor in Smile does say the belly in the beast. Not bad when Bill said about the virus going viral. Not a bad episode although not spectacularly great and the robots does not make for a bad menace of this episode. However I did enjoy it a little bit more upon second viewing. On the subject of smiling a day after watching Smile saw Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 featuring Karen Gillan as Nebula in which Mantis used smiling to introduce herself and the day after that finished Teachers (US) 2.5 Snap Judgement ended with teacher Chelsea being told to smile.

In Smile, in the TARDIS scene at the end, the Doctor says that he has a vault to guard.
However the DVD subtitles correlates this as him saying: "...a vote to God." !
