I might be wrong, but doesn't a Time Lord only have 13 lives? Will they take this into account, or just continue on until the 86th Doctor or something? Or perhaps he will cheat death several times like the Master? Or will he die after the 13th Incarnation?!?

I would have thought that if the series is still going strong when the thirteenth actor to play the role decided to leave and the BBC wanted to make more episodes then an explanation would be written into a story to explain this. Others say that the series should end no matter what so that it goes out on a high but it's all up to the BBC and the production team in charge at the time.
I believe Russell T Davies has said that should the problem arise he would use a plot device to defy the rule, I think he mentioned something along the lines of now that the Time Lords are gone their laws no longer apply and the Doctor can live forever (assuming the thirteen lives rule was a forced regulation, not an inbuilt bodily function).

But who's to say that Russell T Davies and co are going to be producing the show when the final actor comes and plays the Doctor? In the past production teams have changed completely, or nearly completely.

There's nothing to say that Russell will still be around, it's just that he has said that if he were around when the time came, he would use such a method to get round the problem (presuming the BBC still wanted the series to go ahead)

(presuming the BBC still wanted the series to go ahead) Well, I can't imagine them cancelling the show just yet. It's too much of a ratings winner you see. However I should think that RTD, if he's there to the bitter end, would think a way round that Golden Rule layed down in 'The Deadly Assassin'.

However I should think that RTD, if he's there to the bitter end, would think a way round that Golden Rule layed down in 'The Deadly Assassin'. Again, I didn't mean it was going to happen soon, but in (hopefully) several years to come when we had seen the Doctor progress to his final incarnation. A way round the problem that I thought about could be that the Matrix computer on Gallifrey actually stopped the Time Lords from regenerating past thirteen lives (via manipulation of the bio-data extract) so that they were not immortal, which as the Doctor stated in 'School Reunion'; was a curse. This would also explain how the Time Lords offered the Master a new regeneration cycle in 'The Five Doctors'. It's a bit of a complicated way round it, probably not too easy on the ear for fans unfamiliar with the original series, but it's a start.

Just a question, should they carry on making Doctor Who if the 13th Doctor dies in 2023?

Well it depends RTD said that cause the Timelords are gone that rule might have gone to so he might have unlimted times when he changes but i think he should die at 13 like he said himself everything has a time to die and everything most die some time or another.

It's because 2013 seems a tad too early. ;D Actually, it's just a hypothetical and I needed a date far enough in the future to show that the programme has been running for a long time, but not so far forward as look silly.

[glow=red,2,300]I think the show will still be so successful that they will come up with something so that he lives on.[/glow]

Don't worry, by 2023 they'll have enough technology to create PDA/MA style programmes bringing back all your old faves with a CGI update, there'll be dozens of spin off series in every medium you can think of and you'll be downloading 13th Doctor stories straight from the BBC (or whoever) with your own face and voice or those of your favourite actor/best mate. This is one series that will outlive us all.
