I would rather have 13 good episodes a year than 13 good and one terrible one.

Thank you dominicsmith for your welcome, and your reasonable measured argument and points, much appreciated! I recall when "Revelation of the Daleks" first aired, I didn't like it much, because it was (imho) "too jokey" and "theatrical" and very, very black in humour. I found "Love & Monsters" very, very satirical, another extremely black comedy, a satire. Yes on one level it's "silly" and "juvenile", but on that other level it's deep deep black! Some of the scene with the people absorbed are both grotesque, and humorous (with more f*rt) jokes. I just think the story is clever and works in its own way; it does what it does in 45 minutes. Of course the appeal for tales with more tension and more subtle humour is perfectly valid, let's see what Gareth Roberts et al come up with in 2007 for us! Overall, this season, and having recently revisited Season One from the Hartnell era plus tales lke The Crusade and The Power of the Daleks - all very lyrical, finely-crafted work by David Whitaker - I am thrilled by the punchy, pacy, never-a-word-wasted, sharply-crafted, sharply-paced, funny, and quirky scripts we've had this past two years. We are in yet another Golden Age of Doctor Who, across multimedia, and I'm very happy indeed, about that! I'm not blind to faults, but I know when times are rewarding! Here's to the build-up to this season's end; I'm gonna miss Rose, and there will be tears before bed-time, you mark my words!

So I take it you people didn't much like this episode? What ever gave you that idea? ;D What did you think of it? Well as I live in Australia, the only way to view this episode is to download it on the net. Unfortunately my internet connection is not sufficient enough for such a large download Therefore I have to wait until the start showing the second series here in Aus on the 8th of July (Coincidently the same date series 2 finishes in the UK)

This episode was the worse I have ever seen. I thought the Hartnell episode with the bugs (Zarbees) was bad, but this was awful. I thought every Colin Baker episode was terrible, but this was awful. I thought the Sylvester McCoy episode with the Candy Man was poor (although political in its subtext), but this was awful. It's fun to watch how great production values and a poor story can interact. I forgave a lot in the old episode around production values, but the stories were usually engaging.
I wondered if someone slapped around the team and said the show needs to be more directed at kids?
Someone please take the sonic screwdriver away from the Doctor again. It now seems to do just about anything and it's a sorry plot device

Someone please take the sonic screwdriver away from the Doctor again. It now seems to do just about anything and it's a sorry plot device Ahem, I would just like to rebut that statement there. Agreed it shouldn't be overused but it shouldn't be dropped out of the series either. That was a decision John Nathan-Turner made in 1982. Anyway, only writers of the 1980's and 1960's could've made a "no-sonic screwdriver" story work and not be boring, such skill however doesn't apply to today's writers unfortuantely. Anyway, even if it did I still think the Sonic Screwdriver should be kept outright, albeit used in moderation.

I'd like to see the Doctor use a variety of different gadgets to conduct the operations the sonic screwdriver does, I do think the device is good for overcoming things like locked doors but as for the more elaborate things like conducting medical scans and the like, why not give the Doctor other little gadgets to use?

Because then it becomes Inspector Gadget not Doctor Who. The Sonic Screwdriver is part of the mythos, and it shouldn't be changed.

Very true but still, the whole thing of the sonic screwdriver being able to do anything does seem to me at least a bit of a plot device as an answer to anything, when in trouble use the sonic screwdriver, it's getting a bit predictable. Yes the Doctor shouldn't be stopped from saving the universe by a locked door but at least the writers could find a more inventive way of getting him to find his way out of trouble. If not new gadgets, why not adopt another of the Doctor's little quirks and exploit it; the idea that he can use knick knacks and items lurking in his pockets to solve a problem, as he has done in the past. It's hardly a flashy use of alien technology, more an endearing quality the character has. That or he could utilise the equipment around him more.

Thats a good point actually. I mean how many times in the original series had the doctor used something else amongst the clutter in his pockets to get him out of a scrape. From a Yoyo to jellybabies

I think you're just overreacting there. Anyway, a bad day of Doctor Who is better than a good day of a good few other sci-fi programmes.
