I went into this episode with low expectations and I was still disapointed . I don`t know if its because as someone else has said elsewhere that they crap stories are the ones written by RTD, I`ve not checked, but Jesus this one was poor, but then I knew it would be with Maureen Lipman as the villian. Tv`s answer to Billy Gunn. Couldn`t draw flies with a mouthful of manure.

I saw this episode on the night of broadcast and I found it rather good, better than my initial expectations. I found it suitably dark as with a good deal of the episodes before. The bit with the Television sucking the lifeforce out of viewers, I think Mark Gatiss had a point there, HA HA! ;D However the Father/Son scenes left something to be desired this was, in my view, a rather good episode. Finally I especially liked the bit with the video tape, "Betamax".

I generally agree with you there, I enjoyed this immensely but I actually rather liked the father and son scenes, I though Rory Jennings did a fantastic job in the episode, hard to believe he's actually older than Billie Piper ;D

Oh well, I'm going to be in the minority it seems. I found this to my my favourite story thus far on season 2. Very clever for so simple a story. And I was really quite chilled by an evil Maureen Lipman! heh.

I personally think that women, e.g. Maureen Lipman, are better at doing creepy and slightly unnerving than men.

I think they need to bring back more of the persistant enemies like the sontarans, the master, etc. The non-entities like the Wire just don't work for me.

I tend to disagree, although it's nice to see returning monsters one in a while I think the series should be as the original was, and use more one-off villains. Good writing can make them work very well (in the classic series some of the most well-loved stories had one off villains such as 'City of Death' and 'Terror of the Zygons' ) and I think the new series will benefit more from new surprises each week other than just reverting to using old villains revamped or a new villain re-used a lot.
