Planet of Giants featuring the First Doctor, Susan, Ian and Barbara opened the second season of Doctor Who and it was originally intended as a four-part.
However there was soon a production decision to reduce the story to three episodes and the originally intended episodes 3 and 4 of the story was amalgamated into one episode.
The DVD release of Planet of Giants includes as one of its special features a reconstruction of the two aforementioned episodes on how they could have looked like based on they played out in the original scripts.
It also involved new actors dubbing in for the characters played by actors who are now deceased including John Guilor filling in for William Hartnell as the First Doctor and Katherine Mount filling in for Jacqueline Hill as Barbara. The still-living William Russell also reprised his role as Ian for this reconstruction.
Crisis:
Part 3.
Crisis was not just the name of the original episode 3 but also the name used for the amalgamated episode.
Fascinating bits includes seeing the cat meeting his end, more of Bert and Hilda at the post office and the discussion between Forester and Smithers with the situation with they are in.
The highlight of the expansion of scenes with Forester and Smithers is that of the former calling someone from his workplace to prepare production of DN6. As already established in the episodes that were shot this further emphasised Forester’s determination and confidence in the production of DN6 especially after he earlier in the first episode Planet of Giants bearing the same name of the overall story had killed Farrow from presenting his recommendation against DN6’s production.
The cliffhanger with Barbara passing out from effects of DN6 made for a very effective cliffhanger.
