How many times has the (television) Doctor mentioned his granddaughter (or even his children) since Susan left him?

Once is what I've counted: "The Empty Child" part one.
Albeit no names named but an indirect reference.

Theirs been planty of times when they could have done that but lets face it as long as RTD is their we will be lucky even to see a small bit of the Doctors past.

I don't think Russell wants to confuse the new viewers, which I can understand.

Yes but what about the old??? they have a right to it, even if they put small thing from the past like an old book or a sat of car keys belonging to the 3rd doctor.

As Dominic Smith said: the fans only make up 20-25% of the viewers. A good deal of them might no have seen the show before and anyway, if references aren't regulated at the start, in the end their use will be somewhat, gratuitous. If you catch my drift.

A few more references couldn't hurt. It's not exactly mind-blowing stuff we're talking about.

You have both brought up some valid points! It is a good point that the 'regeneration comment', The Doctor makes about his own ears, could suggest he did only recently regenerate. There fore if the 8th Doctor can take 3 or so years to come back to a companion, I suppose it is possible that the 9th Doctor would take a while to get back to Rose. Of course from her perspective it was just a few seconds. That's time travel for ya. ;D I thought the same thing when he looked the mirror. It was like he was seeing what he looked like for the first time. So I figure if he regenerated because of the Time War, then the destruction of Gallifrey and the Time Lords (supposedly) would have happened fairly recently. In real time of course.

Just statement: It's Doctor Who, what "real time"? The Doctor's been back and forth through time so many times that I'm surprised that the universe hasn't just given up and collapsed on itself.

In fact... how does the Doctor know how old he is? He's hardly going to have a calendar.

He alluded to his family in Tomb of the Cybermen when he was talking to Victoria.
