Recently all the surviving episodes of the Patrick Troughton Doctor Who story The Enemy of the World have been found and I recently finished the first episode.
Episode 1: The story takes place in 2018, which is quite close in timing to 2013 the year of all the episodes’ recovery, as the TARDIS lands the Doctor, Jamie and Victoria at an Australian beach. Quite a fun atmosphere to begin the story until three men spotted them and wanting to kill the Doctor thinking that he is someone else. What ensues is an exciting sequence as the time travellers got rescued by Astrid Ferrier. The chase ultimately ends when their pursuers all got killed by accident. Astrid explains the reason why those men wanted to kill the Doctor was because he is the doppelganger of Salamander (like the Second Doctor, Salamander was of course was also played by Patrick Troughton). It was quite tense the cliffhanger due to the Doctor being forced to impersonate Salamander at a moment’s notice.

Episode 2: Patrick Troughton delivered convincingly the Doctor pretending to be Salamander and then as Salamander. As this episode was previously lost and found recently it was impressive when Jamie pretended to save Salamander’s life and the volcano eruptions. From viewing this episode noticed that someone was hiding in the bushes at Salamander’s palace but not something that gets addressed. Most probably someone behind the scenes being caught on camera.

Episode 3: Prior to the rediscovery of the other episodes, episode 3 was the only surviving episode of the story. Notwithstanding the audio soundtrack of the story, I have now seen this episode after seeing the two previous recovered episodes with a clearer picture of the visualisation of the presentation of this story and it makes more sense than ever before. Fedorin was sure weak-willed but that well for Denes’ favour but not for long as he got killed in a bungled rescue attempt. The rescue attempt was bungled due to the Guard Captain where he saw Astrid resulting in Jamie and Victoria’s cover being blown. The chef Griff makes for comic relief including his comment that bad food should not be caused for violence. Good cliffhanger when Salamander and Bruce suddenly deduced that the former has a doppelganger meaning the Doctor.

Episode 4: Antepenultimate episode of the story. Jamie and Victoria are absent in this episode with them being kept prisoner somewhere. Pretty good action sequence as the Doctor, Kent, Astrid and Fariah tried to get away from Benik and his men. Astrid sure pull a trick for her getaway but unfortunately was not so lucky. With the recovery of this episode along with the rest of the recovered episodes of this story we finally look at the underground base that Salamander goes into with the people there having no idea what has gone on up in the real world. Quite a design for the elevator to the said underground. Glad to finally to get a clear picture of Colin and Mary. Oh dear what a cliffhanger as someone unexpected comes in at the end.

Episode 5: Penultimate episode of the story. The Doctor was sure convincing as Salamander to Jamie and Victoria all for the benefit of trying to convince Bruce on the misdeeds of Salamander. We get more on the underground “survivors” with one of them Swann finding out that Salamander has been lying to them. Quite good how the two storylines intersect with Astrid finding the stabbed Swann at the cliffhanger.

Episode 6: Conclusion. A very good episode to end this story. What a revelation that Kent had colluded with Salamander in getting the shelter people into the said shelter. Kent is just as bad as Salamander is. The first indication of Kent as a villain was when Astrid promising Colin and Mary that they will find the person responsible for bringing them down there which was then followed by a scene of him. Quite convincing the Doctor deceiving Kent that he is Salamander. Intriguing last scene in which the Doctor and Salamander finally meet with the latter returning the compliment of the former’s impersonation of him. Glad to finally see Salamander’s demise in the time vortex and what a cliffhanger lead-up to the next story The Web of Fear.

The DVD info text on Episode 5 said about the guard chasing Astrid after she left the caravan that when we next see him he would be changing his helmet in fact he changed his entire body. This is because this next scene of the guard has him played by a new actor in schoolboy Nigel Burtwhistle. Since this is Doctor Who I thought it would have been appropriate for the info text to say that the guard had regenerated!

Saw Remembering Deborah Watling, a tribute documentary on the late Deborah Watling which is in The Enemy of the World Special Edition DVD. Among those interviewed were her brother Giles Watling and sister Nicky Matthews. Giles like Debbie and their father Jack was also an actor and Giles’ work included doing some Big Finishes. Since 2017 Giles has been a Conservative MP. Debbie also has another sister Dilys Watling who was also an actor. Dilys is still alive but for some unknown reason was not interviewed for this documentary. Instead pictures of Dilys is presented in the documentary.
