Episode 1: Interesting first episode of the story that introduced the Ice Warriors for the very first time. We get an indication of the conflict between Clent and the self-imposed exile Penley and quite timely the arrival of the Doctor, Jamie and Victoria. Nail biting moment when the Doctor prevented a catastrophe in the base control room and him answering Clent’s question in time. Ooh what a cliffhanger for the first episode with the Ice Warrior starting to revive as the ice around him has begun to melt and this occurs in Jamie and Victoria nearby!
The DVD subtitles first refer to Jamie as Man before referring to him as Jamie even before his name was first mentioned. Not quite consistent from the subtitler because either he knows Jamie or he doesn’t and the subtitles should have reflected that.

Episode 2: This episode is among the missing 97 episodes of Doctor Who and is represented on the DVD release by it being animated. Quite terrifying for Victoria accompanying, against her will, Varga especially her reaction when she thought Varga killed Clent. Amusing what Penley said on Clent being unconscious after he got attacked by Varga. Thrilling on more Ice Warriors seen at the cliffhanger.

Episode 3: Like Episode 2, Episode 3 is animated on the DVD release due to it being among the 97 episodes that are still missing. I have applaud Miss Garrett's attempts to get Penley back to the base but to no avail with him suggesting that she dig up his notes to help with the situation that is occuring. Quite fearful when Jamie got caught in the Ice Warrior blast along with Arden. Arden is dead as a result of it but fortunately not Jamie. Terrifying cliffhanger when Victoria was targeted for blasting as she is communicating with the Doctor.

Episode 4: It is a pity of how Storr met his end. If he truly understood how dangerous the Ice Warriors were he probably would not be killed off. Thrilling cliffhanger with the Doctor in the airlock with his head in danger of being blown off.

Episode 5: Penultimate episode of the story. Originally aired on December 9 1967 exactly 12 years before I was born. Clent and Penley are finally seen face to face and my what are fiery reunion it was at that. Clent sure had an unusual way to end an argument between himself and Penley and Jamie by ordering Walters to fire the tranquilizer gun on them which was ironically given to him by Penley. What an inconvenient time for the Doctor to have trouble with that stopper on a phial as he was about to use the phial on Zondal. Thrilling cliffhanger as the Doctor and Victoria tries to stop Zondal from firing the cannon.

Episode 6: Conclusion. Very good conclusion to the story. A good lesson in that at times one has to rely on your own capabilities and not by what a computer says. That computer sure went berserk when it had no idea how to save itself choosing instead what was basically suicide. As noted by the DVD commentators Deborah Watling as Victoria sure looked tiny when she was with the Doctor by the cannon. Amazing that until it was pointed out to me by the DVD info text that I did not realise just how early the last we see of Debbie Watling in this story. As pointed out by both the commentators and the info text she had to be somewhere else filming another scene but what she did on this particular day will forever remain a mystery as not even Debbie Watling what she remembers what she was doing back then. Commentary moderator Toby Hadoke mentions to his fellow commentators that Malcolm Taylor (Walters; and not to be confused with the character of that name in Planet of the Dead) had agree to be part of the commentary but he had passed away before he could joined them. Hadoke mentions Taylor’s real life death just shortly before his fictional death came on-screen and ironically his fictional death came by without any comment from them.

On The Ice Warriors DVD release one of the special features is Doctor Who Stories – Frazer Hines Part 2 with the previous part in The Krotons release. Now I don’t have The Krotons release but it is something I always intended to get and I bought The Ice Warriors release due to the animation of missing episodes 2 and 3. So the inclusion of Part 2 of Doctor Who Stories – Frazer Hines on The Ice Warriors release felt like a cynical attempt to get extra bucks from people who only bought The Ice Warriors due to the aforementioned animated episodes and not had any original intention to get The Krotons release.
