The Fourth Doctor as played by Tom Baker. It's a well known fact that he was the longest serving Doctor. Also I think that some of the best Doctor Who stories were produced during his tenure- 'Genesis of the Daleks', 'The Talons of Weng-Chiang' and 'Pyramids of Mars' to name a few. Most of these were produced during and between the years of 1975 and 1977. Funnily enough this was when Phillip Hinchcliffe was in power as producer. Then the show had more of an emphasis on horror and the things that live in the understairs cupboard (no, not Uncle Alfred! ;D). This of course annoyed Mrs Whitehouse and as a result ratings shot up, averaging 10 million in fact. However Hinchliffe was relieve of duty and Graham Williams took over as producer. During this time humour and wit began to take over as plot points. All this came to a comedic high-point during the 1979-1980 season where Douglas Adams was script editor. It didn't last. In 1979 John Nathan-Turner took over as producer and began making radical changes to the show. All these debutted in 1980 with the story 'The Leisure Hive'. At the end of the 1980-1981 season Tom Baker left and was succeded by Peter Davison. When Davison left, it was downhill from then on... Conclusion- In my humble opinion, Tom Baker's tenure as the Timelord was the definitive high-point of the classic series of Doctor Who. Here we see the best stories of Doctor Who (though granted there are a few duds). Comments?

I fully agree with what you say. JNT, while having the shows interests at heart, swung the show in the wrong direction. The early days of Tom Bakers era were some of the best in Who history.

You know, it has been known for people, they want to do something right but it all goes wrong. That's John Nathan-Turner for you. Though you can't blame him for everything, and you can't say all his stories were rubbish. Look at 'The Caves of Androzani' for example (though tastes do vary).
