Elaboration ! What's interesting or worthwhile about just saying "great!"?
I swear it has to be a mere technicality that this has Graham Williams' name on it as producer, and Holmes' name on it as writer. This is more Holmes/Hinchcliffe-y than many Hinchcliffe stories. I love the matter-of-fact period detail and dialogue, that makes you feel as if you're really there. It's not the Hollywood approach, where they throw in clumsy, cliched, pseudo-historical details to let you know in huge neon letters that this is a certain era. It's more as if we walked in through the back door of the Edwardian era, and caught them in the middle of doing something else. No one's trying to *convince* us it's 1910, or 190?. It just is.

Elaboration ! What's interesting or worthwhile about just saying great? While others may disagree, for myself its a historical-esqe story that doesn't bog down in historical accuracy, plus it has a nice Lovecraftian feel to it.

Someone I'm corresponding with by tape has tried to explain Lovecraft to me. Anyway, yes, the historical detail seems natural and seamless.

Its very difficult to explain Lovecraft and his works accurately. I know, I've tried many a time. Its easier to read some of his more Mythos-related stories (Call of Cthulhu, Shadows over Innsmouth, Shadow out of Time and The Dunwich Horror) to get and understand the themes of his works.

A good story overall but if I have to name a fault it's that for some reason Leela's voice seems to grate on me. Also I think the character of Reuben is quite good.

5 out of 5 from me. I think Louise Jameson puts in one of her best performances as Leela here.

Graham Williams was told by the BBC to tone down violence in the series, then THIS happens! In fact I think this is the 2nd Best story he produced, after 'City of Death' of course. Had I said 'The Creature from the Pit' a lynch mob would have arrived at my house in seconds!

Great moment where Leela appears to goof with the Dr, in the boiler room, where she says they have nothing to worry about, they'll easily defeat this primitive enemy... he leans in, puzzled look on his face... she says "because you are a Time Lord!" He looks away shrugging....
What I missed for years was that Leela starts silently laughing to herself as Tom turns away, revealing that she was making fun of him, for being so full of himself. The Dr never sees that part... I missed it too. I had thought she was just being naive. It occurs to me that it might have been written that way, with Louise adding the laugh herself. If so, that was brilliant. This was the story where Louise Jameson stood up for herself with Tom for the first time, in real life I mean.

I gave it 3/5. It's a good story but I don't find it really special. The acting is really good, there's a bit of claustrophoby in the lighthouse when more and more people arrive, the Doctor makes a mistake, Leela is terrific though once more she's all dressed up ;D but overall I didn't have a great feeling of chill like in a horror movie. My impression is that the rutan was shown too early: considering the level of special effects they had at that time I think it would've been best to show only its tentacles until the end.

True, the special effects left something to be desired, but all in all quite chilling...
Terrence Dicks does a wonderful job with the scripts.

I've said this elsewhere, but I loved this episode. My daughter was particularly terrified by the Rutan.
