Admire him?
Why was he so popular? I think it was simply because he was around for the longest!

Tom Baker is and always will be my favourite of all the Doctors. As to why... well, I think thats because he made the Doctor into the character that everyone thinks of. Prior to Tom Baker taking over the role, he was an alien time traveller, but afterwards (at least to me) he was a charming eccentric alien time traveller. That warm smile as well.
I've always felt that the Doctor wasn't just eccentric, but actually a little mad or touched in the head. Tom Baker's Doctor showed that off perfectly and, I think, influenced the actors who came after a great deal.

I really like him, yes, but worship? Thats a little over the top for me!
I feel in some ways that Tom Baker is a little over-rated. For 'most-popular Doctor' read 'most well-known Doctor'.

I like a lot of his stories but to be honest he went on far too long and would have been much better for just three or four, five at the most seasons'.

I'm afraid I'm going to have to disagree with you there, someone's got to be in the part the longest, and I think Tom Baker was the best candidate. Made some of the best stories I think, especially 'Genesis' and 'Talons'.

"I've always felt that the Doctor wasn't just eccentric, but actually a little mad or touched in the head."
When other characters thought that, such as the bureaucrat at the start of Seeds of Doom, it just showed how hopelessly unimaginative and lifeless they were. Dr 4 was how people should be. The people who questioned his sanity were obviously clueless. He took a childlike delight in things. He was bored by the stuffy straightforward "seriousness" of people, on Gallifrey and Earth, and threw non sequiturs into the conversation to shake up their ossified mindsets, and to entertain himself while they were all boring him to death.
I don't know what to make of the comment you often hear, that TB was the "most alien". I identify with him. But then, people generally do seem alien to me. He's always the sanest person in any room he's in.

For me, it was probably his humour that made him the best Doctor (and of the course the scarf).

I personally think that the Tom Baker's first three years were his best, then the show slided a little bit but climbed back onto its feet during Season Eighteen. Also with the possible exceptions of 'The Armageddon Factor' the Fourth Doctor had six-part stories that could be watched six episodes non-stop beginning to end. Plus we get some of the best Doctor Who stories popping up during this era. Phillip Hinchliffe, best producer ever in my opinion!
