The 2nd Doctor is most famous for his flute or recorder. I notice in the latter episodes he no longer has one. I remember he starts using it in Power of the Daleks, but am unsure when he stops using it. Is anyone aware when and why the 2nd Doctor stops using it. I know it plays a part in the 3 Doctors.

Is the recorder actually meaningful in any way? Just a musical instrument, or a nice piece of technology?

The Second Doctor would often play it when things got serious. Any dvd in his era will show him with his flute. I suppose it is as meaningful as Tom's scarves or sonic device, Peters celery, or any other prop the Doctor used.

To calm himself down? Or to put a monster to sleep The jelly babies were quite useful sometimes (or he tried to make them useful).

I'll take a look for you. Most likely, when the 3rd Doctor came along he just didn't use it, end of.

It would be interesting to know why and how he used it. Was the 2nd Doctor really that musical?

I know he used it in The Abominable Snowmen and he has it in The Three Doctors but I do not know when he last uses it in his era.

We might all have to watch the photovideos , videos and read the synopsises of Patrick Troughton to discover the answer.

Recorder Trivia Bits...
1) Patrick trought really did play the recorder and brought his own onto the set to incorporate it into the character of the Doctor.
2) The last time the Doctor was seen *playing* his recorder (in the second Doctor's tenure) was in "The Abominable Snowmen". The last time it was *referenced* was in "The Enemy of the World" (Jamie and Victoria are not sure if the Doctor is really the Doctor or the villain Salamander so the Doctor whistles a tune while miming playing his recorder. When he finishes the tune he indignently tells his young companions "But you made me leave it in the TARDIS!")
3) The last time the recorder is *seen* (sort of) is in "The Invasion". When at the IE compound in Vaughn's office the Doctor takes what appears to be a simple tube out of his pocket, removes one end then fixes an eyepiece to it and turns it into a miniature telescope -- well, the tube was the recorder.
4) According to one resource (which at the moment I can't remember, sorry) the Powers That Be on "Doctor Who" wanted the recorder playing phased out because they thought it was a little too silly (killjoys).
5) The recorder (followed by the Second Doctor) of course then subsequently appeared in "The Three Doctors".
6) In the Fourth Doctor story "The Masque of Mandragora" the Doctor and Sarah Jane find the secondary control room and one of the items Sarah Jane finds there is a recorder -- an obvious nod to the Second Doctor.
7) In the Sixth Doctor Story "The Two Doctors" the Sixth Doctor, upon awakening from his collapse, remembers having something he blew into. After considering a flute he finally remembers that it was a recorder -- of course reconnecting with the memories of his own past life.

I recently watched Castrovalva, and I believe the Fifth Doctor plays on the recorder in that episode.
