Just a routine question on how the series got started and who was responsible for the series' creation. Many Who fans and some of our newer ones interested in the new series may not know how it originally began. A thread dedicated to this concept seems a good idea.

I happen to know Terry Nation created the Daleks and I am pretty sure John Nathan-Turner was there at the beginning, but I could be wrong.

The series was created by a guy called Sydney Newman and the first producer was a woman called Verity Lambert. Other members of the production crew were Mervyn Pinfield and David Whitaker, Associate Producer and Script Editor respectively.
Edit: JNT didn't become a member of the production crew until 1976 as Production Unit Manager. It was in 1979 he became the new producer.

If someone really wants to know about the origin of the series my advice is to buy "The Beginnings" boxset because among the bonus features there's a documentary that explains the birth of the legend.

Sydney Newman. What a great, great, great, great, excellent, great, superb, great, great, great man! I bow down at your feet! (Might be a bit difficult though).

I used to have have a book which talked about the classic series, including the beginning. Wish I still had it.
