I recently visited the Modernist Exhibition at the V&A Museum in London. On display is a work by Russian Modernist, Georgii Krutikov, called the Apartment Complex from his City in the Sky series. I was immediately struck by the uncanny resemblance of the work to a Dalek. Does anyone know if Raymond Cusick ever acknowledged this painting as an inspiration for his Dalek design? It maybe that he had seen the painting and it had perhaps influenced him on a subconscious level. I would be surprised if there were no link between the two. www.villes-en-france.org/histoire/utopie3.htmThe Apartment Complex by Georgii Krutikov can be seen at the bottom of this web page. www.vam.ac.uk/modernismLink to Modernist Exhibition at the V&A Museum in London. Interesting observation; hm, mind you, could just be coincidence though .. on a general note, I've always loved the various classic Dalek shell designs, and grew to love even the wartorn ones that came up later, but now that the design was "upgraded" for Series One, I am staggered by what the designers managed to do, there! Does Mike Tucker in particular deserve credit for this? To take Ray Cusick's wonderful template, and actually IMPROVE on it, well, I'm a happy camper once again!
Can't believe there's only a fortnight left, before Series 2 has been and gone .. gonna be a long wait until 2007 ..

There is a certain similarity between the two designs so you may well be right, although I should think it was more of a coincidence. If I remember correctly the general design in terms of shape was based on a female dancer the designer had seen, whose skirt touched the floor and gave her the appearance of gliding along the floor when she moved. Mind you the more detailed parts of the design do hold more than a mere passing glance to the pictures in the first post of the thread.

On the 'Doctor Who: The Beginning' Boxset, there is an apporx. 17 minute feature about the creation of the Daleks and yes Dom there was a mention of a particular nationality dancing technique of sorts which gave that gliding idea.
Also, when someone was trying to desribe the movement to someone else over lunch, the salt and pepper pot things were used to show the movement. And as a result we have one of the most recognisable enemy races of all time.

The designs do look similar though, however it's more likely coincidence and whatnot.

Those photos were inspired by the Daleks instead of the other way around perhaps?
