Just finished reading Nightshade and started the next book in the series, Love And War. I know that these are by different authors, and presumably there is a gap between the end of one book and the start of the other BUT... By the end of Nightshade, Ace has fallen head over heels for a local boy in Crook Marsham (the setting of the story), and has told the Doctor she wishes to stay behind. He whisks her away to tie up a few loose ends with the promise that they will return shortly after they left. Needless to say, this doesn't happen and at the end of book, she is left sobbing and dejected in one of the TARDIS's many corridors while the Doctor has disappeared, apprently to avoid fulfilling his promise. (bear with me here...) By the start of Love And War, everything is fine and dandy and Ace and the Doc are amicable travelling companions once more. My question is... DOESN'T THIS GIRL HOLD ANY KIND OF GRUDGE!!?? I know if I were in her shoes, I sure would, and for a hell of a long time. Something like this would (considering how rocky their relationship has been in the past) surely sour the milk a little? Your opinions, please...

I'm stuck at about the point you are, probably, but didn't remember the lack of a resolution between the two books. there might have been a big gap for me between the two. anyway, I couldn't follow love and War, if that's the one with Bennie appearing and the planetary graveyard.

'Tis indeed that one. I'm finding that books I read 8 or so years ago that left me scratching my head are now much clearer on the 2nd reading. Not sure why. Maybe I'm simply older and wiser, or maybe my understanding of plot mechanisms has deepened.

The Cat's Cradle with all the all the citadels/capitals inside the Tardis is fascinating to me specifically because I couldn't wrap my head around it. About 2/3 or 3/4 of the way through, I had to completely abandon my idea as to what I thought had been happening in the story.

The stories Independence Day, The Fearmonger and Metamorphosis fit here. So the Doctor and Ace have had quite a lot of time between Nightshade and Love and War.
And besides, if you follow the book through to conclusion, you'll see that Ace is neither a) over the Doctor's betrayal concerning Robyn and b) as forgiving as you'd expect.
Nightshade, along with her 'death' in Timewyrm, is the beginning of the end for Old Ace.
