Peter Kay is to appear in Doctor Who.
The Phoenix Nights star will play "cold and powerful" character Victor Kennedy in series two of the revamped BBC show.
He landed the role after writing a fan letter to writer Russell T Davies.
"We are delighted to welcome Peter onboard the Tardis," Davies said.
"Casting of Peter came about after he wrote me the most brilliant letter to say how much he'd enjoyed series one of Doctor Who. From that point on we started talking about a guest appearance."
Kay will be swapping his trademark gags for serious acting. "This is not a comedy turn," Davies said.
Kay will appear in episode 10 of the new BBC One series, which begins in the spring.
Other guest stars who have signed up to appear alongside Timelord David Tennant include Maureen Lipman, Pauline Collins, Roger Lloyd-Pack and EastEnders actress Tracy-Ann Overman. And so it begins. The talentless start to cling on to the show like addicts with a dealer. Can we say Jump the shark? Jesus it annoys the hell out of me. Look at that list, its a who`s who of nobodys and z listers

With the exception of Pauline Collins, I don't know anybody in that list Dom

It always amazes me how quickly people declare the ship to be sinking. It's almost like we ~want~ the show to fail on some level.
Based on the high quality and extreme popularity of the first season, I have faith in the producers to making decent casting decisions. Let's not forget the naysaying that accompanied the casting of such "utter disasters" as Billie Piper, Simon Pegg, Anne Robinson, Trinny and Alexander...

Maureen Lipman is actually a very good actor, she appeared in Jonathen Creek a while back and was very good.
Roger Lloyd Pack is also a fine actor and the same goes for Pauline Collins without saying.
I think you're dismissing them too soon, they'll probably be much better than you think.

I know what you're saying about everybody jumping on the bandwagon, but if you look back at 'classic' Who as far back as the mid-70s you'll find that even then there were 'guest stars' of a certain variety. (Who can forget that bizarre art scene in City Of Death featuring John Cleese and Eleanor Bron?).
Doctor Who is once again a very successful show and I don't think that any of the 'stars' signed up for the new series will in any way harm it.
In the case of Peter Kay, he is a much-loved and sought-after guest and his appearance will be great for publicity. Remember Coronation Street? His appearance was quirky and out of character with the rest of the show, but memorable all the same.
As for the others, well they are for the most part older actors who will be remembered by older viewers as former 'well-known TV stars', and younger viewers won't recognize them at all so no damage done there.
I would also question your perception of 'and so it begins'. The former season had Mark Benton, Simon Day, Zoe Wanamaker, Simon Callow, Penelope Wilton, Simon Pegg and Richard Wilson; all well-known names, (plus many others whose faces are familiar if not their names). Celebrity guests on Who is simply a long-running tradition, so I'm sure there is nothing to worry about.
We should be happy I suppose, that people think its such a hit that they're stampeding to be seen on it...

I don't agree that all the actors who are on that list are a step down in acting. Maureen Lipman, Pauline Collins and Roger Lloyd-Pack are all fine actors but I have to admit that having Peter Kay as a Doctor Who villan is bad casting. When I look at Peter Kay I automatically think of the Amarillo video he did and laugh. Describing him as playing a 'dark and powerful' villan sounds rather scary, in the wrong way I'm afraid.

Just seems like at the moment that the show is on a high and hence you get these has beens or second raters trying to jump on the show in the hopes it`ll lead to better things. I mean Jordan was wanting a part for Gods sake!!! The only things she should be in involves Pizza delivery boys or plumbers who bring their large tools to unclog your pipe.
Its the same thing with the d**n harry potter movies. Some of them aren`t bad actors just miscast to hell. Now I`m going to go pray that the rumour I heard about Billie Pipers t%£$er of an ex having a part as Satan isn`t true. Though I think if he has got a part Satans played a role in that itself. God I`m gonna have to stop posting drunk

I know what I said in an earlier post and I still stand by it, but you're right; if Chris Evans and Jordon appear on it it will lose all credibility with fans and occasional viewers alike (I have to be honest - Trinny and Suzannah were pushing the envelope as far as I was concerned). If we could issue a warning to Russel T and the BBC I would simply say this to them: Did anyone see Jordon in 'Footballer's Wives '? No, me neither, or anyone else I know come to that.

A thought has just occured to me:
I think that we have to try and distinguish here among the different types of celebrity guest:
1) The invited celeb: A 'real' actor of now or yesteryear who applied for a role, auditioned, landed the part.
2) The fan celeb: A person (not necessarily an actor) who has publicly professed a childhood dream of being on the show - and duly gets invited to star because their currently high-profile may bring in extra viewers. (cynical, yes, but lets be honest; that is what its about)
3) The 'self-playing' celeb: A well-known personality who plays themself to add authenticity to a story (eg a chat-show host or newsreader).
4) The publicity-seeking hasbeen/wannabe: Someone who probably manifests themself as a Fan Celeb but really just wants airtime or a fast buck.
Obviously some of these are desirable, and some are not. Can anyone think of anymore?

I hadn't heard Jordan wanted a part. Sickening news for any true Who fan.

Whether an actor is rubbish or not is purely a matter of opinion. There are however a few exceptions but I'm not naming names in this instance. I do however like Roger Lloyd-Pack's character John Lumic (can you guess where I got my user name from? ) and there have been quite a few good guest performances in the Current and Classic Series, though during the 1980's John Nathan-Turner did take it overboard a few of times but no one's perfect. Though I must say I don't really like Trinny and Susannah (as seen in 'Bad Wolf' part one), now where did I put the darts?
