Why does it take so long to film a series of Doctor Who nowdays. It used to take the same time as now, if not less but they shot twice as much material.

I guess they try to have the best acting so they don't do things in a hurry while in the past schedule was tight because budget was tight. Besides CGI special effects require postproduction time.

I think one of the main reasons is the pace at which they shoot; from different set reports I've read it seems to me that there's a lot of sitting around for the actors sometimes whilst technical equipment is set up and everything is planned. The system for shooting is rehearse-record, and sometimes there can be many many rehearsal shots before even starting to roll camera.
Perhaps as time goes on the production team will catch a stride and start being able to cut down the shooting schedule, it has to be said it is rather drawn out compared to some other programmes
