Okay I've got to say something about this. The old show did do a great amount of Earth stories and with less stories in these seasons...i understand less stories set ON alien planets but the ones we've seen so far...have been sorta lame. I mean New Earth might as well be Earth, the colony in Satan Pit, I haven't seen yet but whyu so many set on Earth...and with kids or loons as psuedo companions...I mean I like stories with kids in them too and set on Earth too (By God, Strange was a great show! better than this) but the lack of TRAVELING IN TIME AND SPACE is appaling here. Sure he mentions the years change but the planets suck. The old show may have not had great effects but at least it tried. The Web Planet might be slow moving but that wa an alien planet. Ditto the planet in Planet of Evil. For God's sake the Irwin Allen shows esp LOST IN SPACE did alien planets...why can't this show? I also see a true lack of focus here...the adventures mean nothing to me now. Then again maybe the first season meant so much to me with shows like EMPTY CHILD, FATHER'S DAY, DALEK, and even the two part Slitheen story had great emotional scenes about Rose's safety, her mom's worrying, the Doctor's confronting that he can't make that promise...I've seen nothing this year like that but I've only seen four eps. But truly...the plots seem rather inconsequential. And now they're pulling the BIG War tactic. When you're sorta gimmicky all season this doens't work.

I agree. We need more alien worlds visited and not just referenced. Its not like theres budget constraints anymore (and saying that, the old series was able to pull off more than a few alien worlds!).

Ah! One of the great mysteries of the universe, first the Bermuda Triangle, then the Loch Ness Monster, now the "Wny no alien planets in Doctor Who?!?!" scenario...
Let me think on this one.

I think the main reason we don't see more alien worlds is Russell T Davies's belief that the audience will find more Earth-based stories scarier as they relate to familiar surroundings and values. True I'd love to see some more alien worlds because Earth stories are getting a bit tiresome, but I'd hate to see an entire landscape just done in green-screen a la 'Underworld'; granted it won't look so tacky with today's technology but still it would feel odd. Oh well they could always go back to using quarries (They already have with 'The Satan Pit' )

In 2005 RTD said that he didn't want stories that threatened alien lifeforms and he was only interested in producing stories with humans under threat which is rather sad. Maybe when he leaves we'll see some more.

I think I speak for most of us when I say "We Want More Alien Planets!" Anyway, I rather liked the Alien-Race-Under-Threat stories, they had that certain quality about them.
However we've seen at least two planets that aren't Earth in the new series, first there's the New Earth from "New Earth", that is NEW Earth not THIS Earth, and there was the "Unnamed Planet Orbiting a Black Hole" from 'The Satan Pit [1&2]".

WHY OH WHY DOES it have to be an alien race under threat story? ? WHy can't they do a nice little story on an alien planet where maybe one of them needs some medicine, preferably the Doctor. Why do we need some attack week after week? Sigh.!

To be honest? I think its because RTD lacks the imagination. Whatever the reason if he doesn`t do something they might as well get rid of the tardis altogether. The third doctor saw more offworld adventures for christs sake.
And as for what RTD wants? Shame the series isn`t being made for his personal enjoyment, someone needs to explain to him its what the viewers and fans want and not what he wants thats important

How about if we all ask the Doctor Who office nicely, they might do a whole season of Doctor Who based on alien planets only. In fact Mars is better than nothing.

I must take back my comment about CGI alien planets, by the look of the one we saw in the pre-titles sequence for 'Army of Ghosts' the production team could pull them off very well.

I think Underworld TRIED and tha'ts the thing. The first ep is very very good, very outer space adventure ieven if impossible. But they tried and the story sags in the middle ALOT...but I like the ending and I like the beginning and the ideas were well done. I can't say the same about some of the stuff this "new" season. Old ideas, gimmicks (Cassandra returns, body swap, werewolf story with kung fu dudes and Rose acting like a real prat, Sarah Jane and K9, Cybermen, etc etc etc and now the Daleks vs the Cybermen...well at least that gimmick can make a good story), and a Doctor who's not really winning me over after a great start in Cmas Invasion.

Oh yes it tried there's no denying that but I'm just saying that the end result of that might be one of the reasons the new series doesn't visit alien planets often, because the production team don't feel they could pull it off and thus the series would suffer. Indeed with episodes eight and nine of the second season the new series has proven they can create a decent alien landscape and as I said in my previous post the CGI shot in 'Army of Ghosts' looks simply stunning. The success these have brought might indeed mean that the production crew look towards using more alien environments next season.

I've been scanning through the back of my mind and I don't think a single Doctor Who story has been based on Mars, of course correct me if I'm wrong. Perhaps they should do one. Anyway would Mars even class as an alien planet?
