Bernard Cribbins has passed away.
Born on December 29 1928, Cribbins had played two different Doctor Who companions each to different Doctors.
His first ever Doctor Who role was as Tom Campbell a companion to Peter Cushing’s Dr Who in the movie Daleks’ Invasion Earth 2150 AD (1966).
Cribbins previously worked with Cushing in the movie She (1965).
Decades later he played Wilfred Mott, Donna’s grandfather in NuWho before becoming a companion himself in the Tenth Doctor swansong The End of Time.
In between companion roles he was an actor considered for the Fourth Doctor in the 1970s but his chances of becoming the Doctor at this time was killed off when he made a statement that he wanted to bring violence into Doctor Who if he became the Doctor.
Just before playing Wilfred Mott, he had played Arnold Korns in the Eighth Doctor Big Finish story Horror of Glam Rock and it is a variation in name to the TV story Horror of Fang Rock which is ironically one with Fourth Doctor Tom Baker given that Cribbins had missed out on being the Fourth Doctor.
Cribbins had returned to play Mott as part of Doctor Who’s upcoming 60th anniversary celebrations in 2023 and had just finished filming on it when he passed.
He was also in Coronation Street playing Wally Bannister
His other work included The Mouse On The Moon, Carry On Jack, Carry On Spying, Casino Royale, The Avengers, Don’t Raise the Bridge, Lower the River, Frenzy, Fawlty Towers, Space: 1999, The Water Babies, Dangerous Davies: The Last Detective, Worzel Gummidge, Alice In Wonderland
He died on July 27 2022 at the age of 93.
