Dead Media is the ninth episode of the ninth season of Big Finish’s Short Trips series.
Featuring the Twelfth Doctor.
Read by Jacob Dudman and marks his debut in voicing the Twelfth Doctor, in lieu of Peter Capaldi.
Released in September 2019 and written by John Richards marking his Big Finish debut.
Prior to Dead Media, Richards was co-creator of audio time travel series Night Terrace, a series that was inspired by Doctor Who as well as Big Finish’s method of making audio dramas.
In addition Dead Media has a stand-in companion called Petra, whom Richards named after Petra Elliott, his co-writer on Night Terrace.
Dead Media is set between The Return of Doctor Mysterio and before the Doctor meets Bill in The Pilot as this has the Doctor working at St Luke’s University.
Despite the time-placement, Nardole is not in this story with the Doctor explaining that Nardole had taken the TARDIS to see ABBA at Eurovision 1974. The Return of Doctor Mysterio established that Nardole can fly the TARDIS.
Dead Media has the Doctor doing a podcast at St Luke’s. In real-life Richards and Elliott hosted Splendid Chaps which celebrated Doctor Who’s 50th anniversary in 2013.
With the Doctor at St Luke’s, it was funny the Doctor expressing the irony that when he was the Third Doctor he was stuck in one place because he didn’t have a working TARDIS.
However now at St Luke’s he has a working TARDIS but has no intention of going anywhere.
Whilst doing the said podcast, the Doctor found out that something is lurking in the A/V department.
With this discovery, the Doctor finds that outdated technology does have a role in the modern world.
Quite a fascinating premise this story presents which also presents an alternate dimension, a menacing creature as well as a good companion in Petra.
Very good for Richards’ Big Finish debut as well as Dudman’s debut as the Twelfth Doctor.
