Mark Eden has passed away.
Born on February 14 1928, Eden appeared in Doctor Who in the third story playing the title character Marco Polo in 1964.
Almost 50 years after Marco Polo, Eden, in what turned out to be his final acting role, made a brief appearance in docudrama An Adventure In Space and Time about the start of Doctor Who playing BBC1 Controller Donald Baverstock as a celebration of Doctor Who's 50th anniversary in 2013.
During An Adventure In Space and Time, Baverstock was not impressed with the first two scripts for Doctor Who and not satisfied with the progress of production that for reason of costs he told Sydney Newman that Doctor Who was to stop production after its initial four episodes.
Putting aside what the real Baverstock’s personal position on Doctor Who and solely on the portrayal of him in this TV movie, I wonder if Baverstock would have avoided his demand that Doctor Who be cancelled after four episodes if he had read the third script produced for the series Marco Polo since Marco Polo of this serial and Baverstock in this TV movie were both played by the same actor - Eden.
Some years after Marco Polo, Eden reunited with a couple of his Marco Polo co-stars Derren Nesbitt (Tegana) and Martin Miller (Kublai Khan) in The Prisoner episode It's Your Funeral. Incidentally Eden is not the last of these three to have a funeral as Miller died in 1969 while Nesbitt is still alive.
Eden was also in the Quatermass and the Pit episode The Halfmen playing Second Journalist and in Coronation Street playing Alan Bradley and Wally Randle.
His other work included The Avengers, The Saint, Doctor Zhivago, Out of the Unknown, Man in a Suitcase, The Crimson Cult, The Rivals of Sherlock Holmes, Jesus of Nazareth, The Professionals & Poirot.
He died on New Year's Day 2021, just over his month before his 93rd birthday.
