Opener of The Master of Callous, the second season of The War Master series. This is a Master-lite episode and written by James Goss who had written The Sky Man, the previous Master-lite season Only The Good. Unlike The Sky Man which was carried mainly by Cole, the Master's then companion, Call for the Dead is carried by Cassandra King, someone that the Master hadn't met yet. The Master, as played by Derek Jacobi, makes reference to the Wicked Witch. Coincidentally the new Master Sacha Dhawan also made reference to the Wicked Witch in his debut Spyfall.
Callous is the name of a world and it starts with Cassandra's father Elliot King with his unsuccessful efforts in mining this world. Cassandra eventually takes over the episode and has her having difficulties in continuing her father's efforts in mining this world. In the midst of this is an Ood carrying a phone with a call from the Master. Goss combines brilliantly the Master and Ood together. Makes me wonder why Russell T. Davies didn't think of doing this in the TV series.
With the Master's limited appearance, the antagonistic void has been filled by Pippa Haywood as a rather heartless Governor and a proven thorn in Elliot and then Cassandra's side.
As a Master-lite episode Call for the Dead is way more depressing than The Sky Man but superb in this depression and certainly what is to come next as Cassandra answers that call from the Master.
