Final in the Monks trilogy. Directed by Wayne Yip. Yip had previously directed two episodes of Class and The Lie of The Land is his debut in parent Doctor Who. In the lead-up to this episode that based on the clips that were shown so far that this episode feels like Last of The Time Lords which ended the 2007 season. In fact both episodes ended a three parter. This conclusion that The Lie of The Land being a retread of The Last of the Time Lords is one that I probably would have come on my own upon watching this new episode. With the parallel of the said two episode being given both features a version of the Master but whereas the Master was at the forefront of Last of The Time Lords, Missy’s presence in The Lie of The Land is of a lesser extent and that included her playing The Entertainer. Despite Missy’s presence it is the Monks who perform the same function as the Master in Last of the Time Lords. Bill is essentially the Martha of this episode and by the same token Nardole could be said of taking the Tom Milligan place but Bill and Nardole are hardly lovers. Last of the Time Lords took place a year after the previous episode The Sound of Drums whereas the gap between The Lie of The Land and its predecessor The Pyramid at the End of the World is half that time at six months. The Lie of the Land is written by Toby Whithouse and for this episode he finally gets to write for the Master albeit as Missy and one of his previous Masterless episodes A Town Called Mercy featuring my wife Karen Gillan had the Eleventh Doctor mentioning the Master. The Lie of the Land being essentially a remake of Last of the Time Lords was noted by Jordan Raskopoulos in the Whovians discussion on this episde. The Lie of the Land came on June 3 2017 almost a decade after Last of the Time Lords on June 30 2007. The Doctor’s narration explains about the Monks ruling the world. This included a picture of the real Winston Churchill. While the picture of the real Churchill is obviously of authenticity it does however raised the question of why not used a picture of Ian McNeice as Churchill. The Doctor’s smile was sure creepy at the end of the teaser. Magpie’s shop makes its latest appearance in this episode. Nardole basically employs the Vulcan neck pinch even though he did give a different alien name to where the neck pinch came from. As expected Bill shoots the Doctor after he told her that he had joined the Monks and that it was not a pretence. However it turned to be all an act as even Nardole was in all it and with the impending fake regeneration. This was all to test whether Bill has fallen under the influence of the Monks. This all culminates in a very good conclusion to get rid of the Monks thanks to Bill and her late mother. So funny about the essay on free will including the Doctor saying that Bill never handed that essay in.
