Thin Ice is also the name of an unmade Seventh Doctor story which was eventually adapted on audio by Big Finish Productions. This Thin Ice is in no way a new version of that story as it is a completely different one. This takes place at the Frost Fair in 1814. This historical episode featuring Bill is rather akin to Martha’s first trip as a companion in The Shakespeare Code and like Martha, Bill notes that her skin colour could be a problem in this historical period. Very eerie when the monster underwater was revealed just before the title sequence. Very good episode and this monster when it departed felt pretty much like the Skarasen from Terror of the Zygons. The Skarasen was thought to be the Loch Ness Monster and the Loch Ness Monster gets mentioned here in Thin Ice. Terror of the Zygons is written by Robert Banks Stewart and coincidentally I had just read a feature on him in DWM #498 when I watched Thin Ice. Upon coming back to the present Bill does a search on her phone to find no mention of the monster in that historical period. This is pretty much like when the Eleventh Doctor in Flesh and Stone noted that no one remembers the events of The Next Doctor which was also in a historical setting. Very intriguing that the episode ends with Nardole at the Vault and him telling off whoever or whatever is in it.. The Next Time trailer for Knock Knock indicates that it is going to be like Ghost Light as it is about a haunted house that has a history with the companion of the day.
