Season 40 opener. Introducing Pearl Mackie as new companion Bill Potts. Surprising that the first we see of Bill is in the opening scene without any preamble and it is not a flashforward. The Doctor is a lecturer at a university and has on his pictures of his granddaughter Susan and his wife River. I personally would not have minded if there had also been a picture of his mother-in-law. There is a little bit of a parallel between Bill and Rose because like Rose in her debut episode Rose, Bill is seen being waken by a alarm clock and being at work. Playing Moira is Jennifer Hennessy and she had previously appeared in Doctor Who in Gridlock playing Valerie. In fact The Pilot came on April 15 2017, the day after the tenth anniversary of Gridlock on April 14. Makes me wonder whether at least one person from Daleks In Manhattan will be in Smile. Christmas briefly turned up here and quite rare that an episode had a Christmas setting which isn’t a Christmas Special. Heartwarming when Bill sees photos of her late mother and they were of course taken by the Doctor. Bill says that the Doctor runs like a penguin and there was once a companion originated by DWM called Frobisher who is a penguin. Peter Capaldi himself had played a character called John Frobisher (who is not a penguin) in Torchwood: Children of Earth. After entering the TARDIS it took longer than usual for a companion in this case Bill to say that it is bigger on the inside but of course still worth it. Bill asked whether the TARDIS has a toilet. The Doctor says that it has and never think of the TARDIS the same way again. Wonder what is this mysterious Vault that is only briefly seen here. The Daleks turns up here as we see them battling their old enemies the Movellans who were introduced in 1979’s Destiny of the Daleks which also marked their previous on-screen appearance. Incidentally the presence of Movellans in The Pilot has something else in common with Gridlock also featuring Hennessy which is that of the late appearance of old villains who hadn’t been seen since their initial appearance in the “classic” series. Whilst The Pilot had the Movellans, Gridlock had the Macra. If Hennessy were to make a third appearance in Doctor Who would that also mark the return of another villains from the “classic” series. The Pilot had originally been known as The Star In Her Eye and that was in reference to Heather. Heather was a very creepy character including when she took on the form of a Dalek. The menacing presence of Heather makes for a good accompaniment to the introduction of Bill as The Pilot is a very good introductory episode for her.
