I just saw this episode the other night & it was alright. A different sort of enemy that was kinda creepy. What is the meaning behind the title? Ok, the kid at the end says that his father is an idiot, but where does the Lantern come in? It wasn't my favorite episode this season. I give it a 5 out of 10.

The 'Idiot's Lantern' was a slang term for a television set in the 1950's, even today some people call it and 'Idiot Box'

The Idiot's Lantern was one of my favorite episode of the season, along Tooth and Claw.
Maybe I prefer historical setting over hyperhyped sci-fi ones, such as the flat cybermen stories of this season.

What's wrong with the cybermen stories? ;D Anyway, as I said, I did think it was good, but coming after action filled "Age of Steel", I think this episode's appeal (to me) was a tad reduced in some ways. Probably due to it being quiter in nature, but I do think it was a good buffer for the next episode: "The Impossible Planet".

The cybermen stories didn't work for me. It felt so artificial, being an uninspired gimmick to bring them back. There was so much that could have been done rather than having to deal with alternate realities, to bring back the real cybermen of the classic series.
I was unable to care for the fate of any of the characters, so it was a big deception for me since I am a big fan of cyberman stories such as The Tenth Planet or The Moonbase.
I don't like when special effects take over the need of a good storyline.

I agree that it would have been better to bring back the original Cybermen instead of creating alternate Cybermen in an alternate world. Still, I think The Age of Steel was one of the best episodes of the season, if not the best. I haven't seen all the episodes of this season yet, I'm watching them on the SciFi Channel here in the US. As for The Idiot's Lantern, I didn't like it. There is already a thread on this.

As much as I did enjoy the Age of Steel/Rise of the Cybermen stories, I would have prefered to see "our"universe's Cybermen return.
Still, in hind sight it did allow them to have that kick ass ending for Doomsday.
