Penultimate episode of season 39.
Heaven Sent is a superb single hander delivered by Peter Capaldi as the Doctor coming just as the Doctor is reeling from the death of Clara in the previous episode Face The Raven.
The episode mostly featured Capaldi and Jami Reid-Quarrell as the Veil the latter of whom being a non-speaking character.
This evoke a reminder of another canonical Doctor Who that of Big Finish's Scherzo as that story featured two cast members the then incumbent Doctor and companion crew of Eighth Doctor Paul McGann and India Fisher as Charley.
Spooky with the turning of the castle.
Notwithstanding seeing beforehand in the trailer, it was sure spooky when the portrait of Clara turned up.
As the Doctor was alone at the castle with the Veil it was surprising to see him in the TARDIS but that was him imagining what it was like to be in the TARDIS at that moment dealing with the problem at hand. In retrospect it probably wasn't surprising seeing the figure of Clara with her back to us the viewer in the TARDIS but I didn't expect a full-on cameo by Jenna Coleman. Looks like Face The Raven did not exactly marked her final work on the series.
The music was very haunting and suits very well the episode's atmosphere. In the end the Doctor found himself on Gallifrey which did not really surprise me. The first clue of Gallifrey came to me when the Doctor saw the word "Home".
Heaven Sent has been an enthralling episode thanks mainly to the sole dialogue of Capaldi and it would not surprise me if this episode gets nominated for a Hugo.
