Written by Toby Whithouse. Doctor Who directorial debut of Daniel O’Hara. This is however not his first work in the world of Doctor Who as he previously directed some episodes of K9. Guest stars Colin McFarlane and Morven Christie. McFarlane had previously worked on both Doctor Who and Torchwood. In fact this is not McFarlane’s first brush with the Twelfth Doctor and Clara as I am also listening to his reading the audiobook of The Blood Cell featuring this TARDIS duo. This episode takes place in 2119 which rather contradicts Jenna Coleman in a video interview as she said it takes place in 2150 instead. This is the first part of a two-parter and the atmosphere feels similar in atmosphere to 2006’s The Impossible Planet/The Satan Pit. Both taking place at a base with its commander having just died and engulfed by supposedly supernatural forces.
In The Impossible Planet/The Satan Pit it was the Devil and in Under The Lake it is that of ghosts.
The teaser, which did not feature the Doctor and Clara took place a few days before the bulk of the episode before the Doctor and Clara becomes involved with the situation at hand, felt pretty much like a short running prequel that turns up now and then to set the stage for the main episode.
The difference here is that the teaser feels like a prequel being made of the main episode itself.
Writer Toby Whithouse and is no stranger to the topic of ghosts which he brings here as ghosts were a fixture of Being Human, the supernatural series which he created.
So funny about the cards and the Doctor reading everything from a card instead of deleting options where applicable. Funny the Doctor mentioning his meeting with Shirley Bassey. Good trick with the hologram Clara.
Funny when the Doctor asked about the radio and the unflattering reference to Peter Andre.
The scene when the Doctor and Clara got separated by a closing door felt pretty much like a similar scene between the Tenth Doctor and Martha in 42. In fact 42 had a character called McDonnell while Under The Lake has the similarly named O’Donnell.
Although I really saw it coming it was terrifying the cliffhanger of the ghost Doctor!
Coincidentally just before seeing Under The Lake began The Ghost and Mrs Muir TV series. I made an order to this series prior to knowing that Under The Lake was going to be about ghosts.

Under The Lake has a DVD commentary with writer Toby Whithouse, producer Derek Ritchie and guest star Sophie Stone (Cass). Under The Lake has the Faraday Cage and Whithouse in the commentary revealed that the idea of the Faraday Cage had earlier been used for a rejected Being Human story idea and Whithouse is the creator of Being Human. In addition Ritchie had worked on Being Human as Second Assistant Director, Under The Lake director Daniel O’Hara had been a Being Human director and another guest star Steven Robertson (Pritchard) had a principal role in Being Human.
