The Silent Stars Go By is a novel featuring the Eleventh Doctor, Amy and Rory. Released in 2011, this featured the Ice Warriors prior to the Eleventh Doctor later meeting one of them on TV in Cold War. This was also released as an audiobook read by Michael Maloney. Written by Dan Abnett. The Silent Stars Go By is a very good Ice Warriors story and prior to Cold War, the Ice Warriors were last seen in the TV series in 1974’s The Monster of Peladon. So for Doctor Who fans who became fans because of NuWho but did not had the chance to see any of the past Ice Warriors stories, The Silent Stars Go By may have been their first introduction to them. A very enjoyable Ice Warriors story and the highlight of it was when Amy had trouble calling them Ice Warriors as she called them Ice Men instead. That was amusing I mean it isn’t really difficult to say Ice Warriors. If this had been a TV story I could easily see Karen Gillan delivering the amusement of Amy’s difficulty saying Ice Warriors. As Ice Warriors are Martians it was fitting the Doctor noted the irony of them not being little green men but big green men instead! Interesting that this tale shows what happens when the psychic paper is shown to someone who can’t read. Quite thrilling when Amy faced off giant rats. Reminiscent of when Leela also faced one in Talons of Weng-Chiang. All in all Abnett did well in his depiction of the Ice Warriors prior to their TV return in Cold War as well as Maloney’s narration of the audiobook.
