Written by Mark Gatiss. This is the episode in which the Doctor and Clara meets Robin Hood. The Doctor eats ice cream in the opening scene. No doubt an homage from Peter Capaldi to his family who had ran an ice cream business. Robin Hood is played by Tom Riley. Notwithstanding whether Robin Hood was ever a real person, Riley has been playing another historical person Leonardo Da Vinci in his lead role in Da Vinci’s Demoms (2013-present). The classic Robin Hood-Little John river fight gets recreated here only with the latter role being filled by the Doctor instead and the Doctor using a spoon against Robin’s sword! It’s so funny that one pushes the other and then the other way around in the river. Nice reference of Errol Flynn, who the Doctor apparently met, and who had played Robin Hood in The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938). Whilst this is the first time that the Doctor has met Robin Hood he did however met two kings who are predominant in the Robin Hood legend that of Richard the Lionheart in the First Doctor story The Crusade, and Richard’s brother successor John in the Fifth Doctor story The King’s Demons and both The King’s Demons & Robot of Sherwood involves robots in the same period in history. The Sheriff of Nottingham is played by Ben Miller and having seen Miller in other work, he certainly brought his own style in portraying the Sheriff. Just like he did with Clara’s hair in Deep Breath, the Doctor once again picks someone’s hair this time its Will Scarlet’s. The Twelfth Doctor mentioned the possibility that he and Clara had arrived in a miniscope. The Third Doctor had been in a miniscope in Carnival of Monsters. A nod to the Third Doctor era as Gatiss is a fan in particular of the Third Doctor. In stating to Clara that Robin Hood was not Robin Hood he questions the existence of impossible heroes. I found it astounding that he said that since the Doctor himself could be considered an impossible hero. So funny that the Doctor and Robin competed against each other at the archery contest before the Doctor settles it by blowing the archery board with the sonic screwdriver. Enthralling revelation of the robots. When they were in their cell, Clara basically says to the Doctor and Robin that instead of fighting each other they should be using their combined intelligence to get out of their situation. This rather reminds me more or less of Benton saying the same thing about the Second and Third Doctors in The Three Doctors. The Sheriff recounting to Clara about the arrival of the robots is rather akin to The Time Warrior, another Third Doctor story. Yet another reference to The Promised Land this time the Doctor reading it in the spaceship database and I am pretty sure of all Robin Hood narratives that I have seen, this is the first time that I have ever seen Robin Hood in a spaceship and I like the sound of saying that. Oh what a delight upon the Doctor looking at the spaceship’s database on Robin Hood that it included the image of Second Doctor actor Patrick Troughton as Robin Hood. Troughton had been the first TV Robin Hood in a short-lived series in 1953. A robot soldier hits the Doctor on the head. Ouch! Amazing that the Doctor got his fellow prisoners to attack and defeat the robots with their shields. Gruesome end for the Sheriff as he fell in that pot.
Robot of Sherwood is a top quality Mark Gatiss script in a terrific blend of Doctor Who and Robin Hood and it is truly worth two for the price of one.
The Next Time trailer for the next episode Listen written by showrunner Steven Moffat feels it is going to be similar in style to another of his written episode Blink.

Robot of Sherwood Extra: www.youtube.com/watch?v=9xfJ5Y8Hyo8&feature=youtu.beA very fun look at making of the fun episode that was Robot of Sherwood. Unlike the Doctor, Capaldi expresses how much he likes meeting Robin Hood. I appreciate the position that Tom Riley was in, in playing Robin Hood and the expectation that goes with it. Curious that when narrator Matt Botten mention other historical figures that the Doctor had met before he neglected to mention Kings Richard the Lionheart (The Crusade) and his brother and successor John (The King’s Demons) since these particular kings were key players in the Robin Hood legend. Quite funny on Riley in denial about being defeated by the Sheriff (Ben Miller). Quite nice Peter Capaldi celebrating his birthday while filming this episode with a Dalek cake. Quite fun that this episode ends with a farewell from the Merry Men.
