Season 37 finale. Written by showrunner Steven Moffat. The Name of the Doctor begins with Gallifrey from long time ago but the fanboy moment kicked into gear with seeing images of the previous Doctors although I had trouble spotting the Eighth and Tenth Doctors. As well as the previous Doctors there is an added bonus of Richard E Grant being back as Dr Simeon since Grant himself had played two alternative versions of the Doctor. I had wondered who Strax was referring to when talking about the gigantic hair person until River turned up. Quite unexpected that the River here turned out to be one after Moffat’s own Library story, the story that introduced her. The Doctor tells Clara that in time travel it is possible to visit one’s own grave. Such a scenario was first mentioned by the Sixth Doctor to his companion Peri in the season 22 closer Revelation of the Daleks. Quite a surprise that Dr Simeon himself is a Whisper Man. Another fanboy moment was when the Dr Simeon mentioned the Valeyard someone who is revealed to be an evil version of the Doctor in The Trial of a Time Lord. The tomb scene was very intriguing and very good to watch. The concept of a place where all the past Doctors are together as ghosts is something I had experienced before in the Big Finish story The Shadow of the Scourge written by TV series writer Paul Cornell. I knew that the Doctor’s name would not be revealed here despite the name of this episode but it was certainly a surprise John Hurt appeared at the end earlier than expected and the caption identifying him as “The Doctor” and marking a cliffhanger to the 50th anniversary story.
