Quite nicely done the scenes of Clara’s parents meeting each other and having Clara and all this witnessed by the Doctor.
Clara’s first official trip on the TARDIS has her visiting what it says in the episode title a place that is completely out of this world.
Just like Clara’s predecessor Amy’s first official TARDIS trip in The Beast Below, The Rings of Akhaten felt The End of the World-esque.
Back in 2005 Rose had an out of world experience when she had her first official TARDIS a trip in The End of The World. In contrast the other long term female companions of the RTD era Martha and Donna both got a period in Earth’s past for their first official TARDIS trips. It seems that since Steven Moffat took over as showrunner, The End of the World has been used as a template on just how the Doctor’s new long-term female companion should experience her first official TARDIS trip.
Noticed in Clara’s book that the numbers 9, 10 and 11 with the former two being crossed out. Obviously a reference to the current Doctor and his two predecessors as they are all the Doctors since 2005. 11’s number hasn’t been crossed out but he is still around unlike 9 and 10.
A very superb performance by Emilia Jones as Merry especially her singing which has complemented well with the incidental music during the Akhaten scenes.
After the Doctor and Clara ride a motorbike together in the previous episode The Bells of Saint John, it is followed up here with them riding a space bike and a bike ride in space is just as thrilling as one on land.
Just before the Grandfather imploded because it could not consume the vast amount of stories, I quite like what the Doctor and Clara said about the stories that have been told and the ones that could have been. It demonstrates about telling the stories that exist and the stories that did not get to exist because of a different pathway that prevented them from being told.
It reflects very well of the never-ending hunger to have stories.
