I'm sure you all know the scene from The Five Doctors, where trying to cross the chessboard in Rassilon's Tower the Master, First Doctor and Teagan have to cross by working out Pi.
My question is this, can that really be done? Using Pi to work out a route across chessboard? I doubt it myself, but hey I may be wrong.

I s'pose you could recite pi and use each digit as a stepping stone, ie 3.14... means the first three steps would be 3rd tile(row 1), 1st tile (row 2), 4th tile (row 3), etc.
Of course, this falls flat in two possible ways:
a) If the floor is an accurate representation of a chess board it will be only 8 tiles wide.
b) If the entire floor is tiled, where do you start counting from? (left hand side, right up against the wall?).

A couple weeks back on a nice quiet day at work (I work in a little games store) I put The Five Doctors on the computer and showed a friend who I am slowly corupting to Dr Who. He has the impression that so long as the sides of the board are equal you could use it to work out the edges and travel along those tiles where it would touch. No convinced myself.

If memory serves its all to do with the ratio of radius to circumference or something like that.
Basically you can calculate the figure yourself by dividing 22 by 7. The answer is infinitesimal since you can take it to an infinite number of decimal places if you like.

You could if you were a TimeLord used to 4th dimensional chess. The 4th Doctor played a lot of chess with k9.
