Season 36 finale written by showrunner Steven Moffat.
Like the previous season finale The Big Bang, The Wedding of River Song begins by showing a reality that has changed with cameos from Simon Callow as Charles Dickens, Ian McNeice as Winston Churchill and real life newsreader Meredith Vierira. Knew that Simon Callow was going to be here but didn’t expect him to reprise his role as Charles Dickens.
Good teaser revealing the Doctor as the soothsayer.
Despite Steven Moffat saying the Daleks weren’t going to appear in this season he still managed to write in a Dalek cameo here. So the Daleks weren’t completely absent this season.
Playing Gantok was Mark Gatiss although he is credited here as Rondo Haxton. Mark Gatiss had written Night Terrors four episodes ago but this is the first time that he has written and appeared in the same season.
Should have known by appearing in the reprise from Let’s Kill Hitler that the Teselecta was going to pop up here but on that a little bit later.
We sadly learn with the Doctor that the Brigadier has passed away. This correlates with the real life passing of Nick Courtney. It is not uncommon for familiar characters to be written off as having died when the actors who played them have done so in real life. Among examples outside of Doctor Who is that of Stargate’s General Hammond (Don S Davis) who could be regarded as the Brigadier’s Stargate counterpart.
The reason why Sarah Jane Smith isn’t getting the same treatment just yet is because the final season of The Sarah Jane Adventures began airing in the UK shortly after The Wedding of River Song. Would be confusing to the audience to state in Doctor Who that Sarah had died only for them to see her again in The Sarah Jane Adventures.
Among the memorable times that Nick Courtney had as the Brigadier was wearing an eyepatch in Inferno. Although it has been explained that the eyepatches here in The Wedding of River Song are not actually eyepatches but eyedrives it still notable to point out their presence here in the same episode of the revelation of the Brigadier’s passing.
Extremely cool moment when Amy used a machine gun.
It was certainly a surprise that it was a Teselecta of the Doctor that got shot.
As to the titular wedding River marries the Doctor. I noticed from comments that has been made including in the corresponding Confidential whether this was a legitimate wedding but it was still funny when Amy came to the realisation that she is now the Doctor’s mother-in-law.
The episode ends with Dorium saying multiple times “Doctor Who” as Steven Moffat has given us a tease on what his plans are for the next season which stretches into the 50th anniversary year in 2013.
