The first episode of the second half of season 36.
Written by showrunner Steven Moffat.
Despite the name of this episode Hitler features little in it. In fact this is not even a history lesson of the Second World War.
No, instead Hitler and Nazi Germany are just mere window dressing to what this episode is really about and that is River Song.
Let’s Kill Hitler is an extremely fun in welcoming viewers back after the mid-season break especially with the opening scene of the Doctor’s name at the cornfield.
The fun gets into full gear by the way River first appears in this episode. Also definitely worth mentioning is Nina Toussaint-White as Mels as she is quite a wild character leading to a certain revelation about her.
Quite nice to see Caitlin Blackwood as Amelia in the flashbacks and the flashbacks were good glimpses of Amelia/Amy’s life in the long years between the Doctor’s first and next meeting with her.
The episode features the Justice Vehicle 6019 more commonly known as the Teselecta a robot that can change its shape to look like anyone and manned by a human crew from the future who are miniaturised inside it. It would seem that Steven Moffat may have seen the Eddie Murphy movie Meet Dave which had a spaceship in the form of a human. Having seen Meet Dave myself I would say that Let’s Kill Hitler and Meet Dave are on par with each other in their use of their said respective vehicles.
Noticed on the screen on the Teselecta that the TARDIS was listed as Type 40, Mark 3. The TARDIS was described as a Mark 3 in The Time Meddler and first described as a Type 40 in The Deadly Assassin. It would seem that Moffat had decided to solve the problem of these two contradictory descriptions by marrying them together.
Also a banana substituting a gun was something that Moffat had done before in The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances.
I was certainly surprised by the cameos from Rose, Martha and Donna.
Much later the Eleventh Doctor carries the sonic cane and it is quite a pity that William Hartnell never got a sonic cane of his own.
Finally the scene in the way in which River saves the Doctor’s life was both spectacular and poignant.
