Here in Australia, A Christmas Carol will be shown here on Boxing Day mere hours after its UK broadcast. A Christmas Carol is reviewed by Michael Idato in this week’s Sydney Morning Herald Guide and gets the “Show of the Week” label. As the episode has not even been shown in the UK, Idato says that going by what has been shown in the trailer, the music, production design and the effective use of a piece of classic literature it all adds up to be the firmest and finest footprint so far in the life of the Eleventh Doctor. The Guide also has an interview with Karen Gillan in which she says she looks forward to watching A Christmas Carol, her first Christmas special. Karen also tells interviewer Frances Atkinson that her favourite companion is Billie Piper and her own theories as to why Doctor Who is so popular during the holiday season. Karen says that, “Doctor Who is the ultimate family show – everyone can watch it. Adults feel a bit of ownership about it because they know the history of the show and so do the children.” With details of A Christmas Carol still under wraps, Atkinson has quoted from Executive Producer Steven Moffat in which he described it as being all our favourite Christmas movies at once in an hour. Arthur Darvill’s name appears for the first time in the title sequence but Rory and Amy have little to do in this story. Steven Moffat makes his Christmas Special debut with A Christmas Carol. Calling this special A Christmas Carol leaves no doubt this is the Doctor Who adaptation of the classic novel of the same name. Michael Gambon plays the Scrooge like figure in Kazran Sardick and singing diva Katherine Jenkins making her acting debut as Abigail. Michael Gambon provides a great performance as Sardick and Katherine Jenkins has a beautiful singing voice. Quite lovely the Doctor and the young Kazran taking Abigail out of her suspended animation for an adventure every Christmas Eve and it is a pity we only get brief snippets of their adventures since it could easily make an entire TV season. It was certainly fun that the Doctor was briefly engaged to Marilyn Monroe. Also worthy of mention is how the shark first made its appearance here as it came as a shock to me. A heartwarming tale and it will interesting to see what Steven Moffat comes up with for the next Christmas Special.

A Christmas Carol Confidential: Very enjoyable the switching of the Cardiff as attended by Matt, Karen and Arthur. In reference to Steven Moffat reading the script, Matt says that it was like Moffat has swallowed volumes of Harry Potter. Wonder if he said that due to Michael Gambon being part of A Christmas Carol cast. In reference to the casting of Michael Gambon, it was so cute when Beth Willis said Dumbledore. Really envy Danny Horn (young adult Kazran) in the amount of time that it took for filming the kissing between him and Katherine Jenkins. Surprise to find out from production designer Michael Pickwoad that he is the son of William Mervyn who had appeared in the William Hartnell story The War Machines. Quite lovely seeing Katherine Jenkins singing with the orchestra.

The Doctor asked young Kazran whether he had seen Mary Poppins.
Curiously enough Karen Gillan who is in this episode did play Mary Poppins in a sketch in The Kevin Bishop Show.
Amy introduce herself to the older Kazran as the Ghost of Christmas Present. While Amy is not a ghost I definitely understand now why Steven Moffat made her the Christmas Present because she sure is one.
