Can anybody explain to me why the Seventh Doctor comics have to be set after Cat's Cradle: Time's Crucible?
The Marvel continuity guide tells us that the comics happen after the Timewyrm stories, but for starters, this is Marvel and they haven't had the Who licence for years. So if we're basing continuity placement off what they said then, then perhaps with that info then, they are wrong now?
For the Seventh Doctor comics to fit, several things need to have happened:
1) The Doctor has met Ace.
2) Battlefield has to have happened as the Doctor has his costume from this time period.
3) The Doctor has to have dropped Ace off convincingly long enough to go experience these pre-NA Comic comics.
4) And one thing to have not happened is Lungbarrow as for an assortment of reasons which are obvious, the Doctor in these strips is not the morose, lonely Seventh Doctor we later get.
The suggestion on this site is to place it during Cat's Cradle, as Ace and the Doctor briefly split there, but several things work against placing this in the Cat's Cradle arc, though.
a) The Doctor in the comics is more 'Paradise Towers' Doctor than 'NA' Doctor. By the time Cat's Cradle hits, he's had the pure darkness of Timewyrm: Revelation and also experienced stories like Fenric or Ghost Light. No way, even if he's got a 'master plan' up his sleeve can the NA Doctor reconcile with the 'comic' one. Thematically, this doesn't fit, whereas pre-NA it just about can.
b) The Doctor and Ace split up, but the TARDIS is damaged in Time's Crucible and yet not in the comic books. So this cannot be then.
I've got a few ideas how to make this fit, although some upcoming Big Finish audios may confuse the matter a bit.
1) Ace and the Doctor experience the BBC books and then meet Hex and go through the Seventh Doctor Audios, which are ongoing.
2) The current 'Lost Stories' which haven't been produced yet, are definitely writing Ace out and replacing her with a new companion. So why not place these following the Hex stories, and giving Ace a send-off. We don't know how it's going to happen but presumably she won't die, as Big Finish also include the NA's in their continuity (See Shadow of the Scourge).
3) The Doctor has several adventures with his safe-cracking companion before he returns to pick up Ace, but then leaves her 'In the Cretacious Period' for a reason (see Train-Flight).
4) He goes off to get Frobisher and then the comic book stories happen relatively in order from then on in, with the Doctor picking up Ace again, and then leading into and alongside the NA's.
Then I think we can safely stitch up the comic book stories thematically and continuity-mindedly, hm? Now all we need is when they make the Ice Time audio (the one where Ace leaves, presumably), to have her sent off to be a Time Lady and practically screw with everything else that is done with the character everywhere else (grins). I look forward to having the continuity chains shattered and to make them fit again. Not gonna happen...
