The Blizzard Makers: Season 1, Episode 13 on the original transmission order, Season 1, Episode 15 on the DVD order. Guest stars Werner Klemperer and Milton Selzer. Klemperer is well known as Colonel Klink in Hogan’s Heroes and coincidentally his Hogan’s Heroes co-star John Banner (Sgt. Schultz) was also in Voyage To The Bottom of the Sea earlier in the first season in Hotline. In fact their Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea episodes came out in 1964 before the debut of Hogan’s Heroes the following year in 1965. Selzer was a familiar face in television of this time, one of those faces that one have seen before but never actually knowing the name of the faces’ owners. Selzer plays Dr Melton and incidentally playing Melton’s wife is Sheila Mathews who is Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea creator Irwin Allen’s own future wife and had appeared in all his shows. The episode begins with newspaper spreads reporting on the dangers of the changing weather. I also saw Another Period 2.9 Lillian’s Wedding which coincidentally also presented newspaper spreads at its beginning. Klemperer makes for a very good villain as Frederick Cregar as he programs Dr Melton to do his bidding. The thrilling highlight of this episode was when Admiral Nelson narrowly avoided boarding a plane that got blown up by a bomb planted by the programmed Dr Melton. They are not shown here but Curley does mention seeing dead fish. Coincidentally I also been seeing The Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew Mysteries 1.2 The Mystery of Pirate's Cove and that showed dead fish.

The Ghost of Moby D(i)ck: Season 1, Episode 14 on the transmission order, season 1, episode 16 on the DVD order. Guest stars June Lockhart. This was broadcast on December 14 1964 and almost a year later Lockhart would become a legend of Lost In Space as she played Robinson family matriarch Maureen Robinson and Lost In Space, like Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, was created by Irwin Allen. This episode is like Doctor Who’s A Christmas Carol as both titles are literary allusions and these allusions gets noted within their respective episodes. June Lockhart’s character in The Ghost of Moby thingy is called Ellen and Doctor Who companion my wife Karen Gillan played a character similar in name to the real-life June Lockhart, that of Jane Lockhart in Not Another Happy Ending. My wife Karen also played a character called Ellen in In A Valley of Violence. The episode starts off with the Bryce family at sea being attacked by a giant whale and claimed the life of the son. The late boy’s parents Walter and Ellen Bryce later boards the Seaview and unbeknownst to the crew Walter’s intent is to avenge the whale for the death of his son. Overall a well done allegory to Moby D(i)ck and the lengths that Walter Bryce went to get his revenge with all the unpleasantness that goes along.

Doomsday: Season 1, Episode 19 on the transmission order, season 1, episode 17 on the DVD order. The Pentagon gets referenced here and coincidentally I saw the latest Doctor Who episode Extremis which briefly feature the Pentagon. In fact in another coincidence Doomsday is also the name of the 2006 Doctor Who season finale. Very tense episode especially when a new crewmember of the Seaview broke down easily to the prospect of Doomsday and how he blew a second chance with the admiral.

Saw Richard Basehart as the lead character in The Alfred Hitchcock Hour 1.9 The Black Curtain. This was broadcast in 1962 a couple of years before Basehart’s lead role as Admiral Harriman in Voyage To The Bottom of the Sea. The Alfred Hitchcock Hour episode also feature Harold J Stone and I discovered that Stone later reunited with Basehart in Voyage To The Bottom of the Sea when Stone guest starred in the episode Mutiny. I have not seen Mutiny yet and the reason why I know Stone’s presence in this episode is because I am currently on disc four on the season 1 set and one of the episodes here is Mutiny with the DVD menu showing a still of Stone in this episode.

The Condemned: Penultimate episode of season 1 on the original transmission order, season 1, episode 18 on the DVD order. This episode sees the testing of a new air mixture with Admiral Falk taking all the credit but in actual fact someone else deserves this credit. J.D. Cannon is especially superb as the vain Falk as he cares more about his place in history than anything else. Admirable that Harriman is not keen on exposing the fraud that Falk was questioning what good it would achieve.

Mutiny: Season 1, Episode 18 on the original transmission order, season 1, episode 19 on the DVD order. Guest stars Harold J. Stone. Stone and Richard Basehart (Admiral Nelson) had previously appeared together in The Alfred Hitchcock Hour episode The Black Curtain. Here Stone plays fellow Admiral Jiggs Starke. Admiral Starke comes about here after Admiral Nelson survived an attack from a giant jellyfish when he was on a new submarine. Admiral Starke comes to dislike Captain Crane’s command style. A very tense episode as the admirals and Crane battle it out on who is right in their decisions on the jelly fish.

The Last Battle: Season 1, Episode 17 on the original transmission order, season 1, episode 20 on the DVD order. Admiral Harriman whilst on a flight gets drugged and kidnapped by Nazis. This episode establishes that the series takes place on an alternate timeline when Admiral Harriman states that the Third Reich had lasted for 19 years as opposed to 12 years in the real world. Admiral Harriman meets other prisoners who are famous men who had their deaths faked by the Nazis so they could use them for their purposes. Admiral Harriman’s capture is inconsistent in approach with the other prisoners. The other prisoners had their deaths faked while Harriman in contrast was kidnapped in front of passengers on a plane. Very thrilling on Harriman and his fellow prisoners plan their escape but there is a traitor among them and the resolution to all this.

The Invaders: Season 1, Episode 20 on the original transmission order, season 1, episode 21 on the DVD order. Guest stars Robert Duvall (although credited as Robert Duval) as powerful humanoid creature Zar whom the Seaview picked up. Duvall as Zar makes for a great menace on the Seaview as he wreaks havoc on it and quite good what Harriman pulled to defeat Zar.

The Indestructible Man:
Season 1, Episode 21 on the original transmission order, season 1, episode 22 on the DVD order.
The episode title refers to a robot which wreaks havoc when it came aboard the Seaview.
A very enjoyable episode and the robot is very menacing by the trouble it causes.

The Buccaneer: Season 1, Episode 22 on the original transmission order, season 1, episode 23 on the DVD order. A very brilliant episode in which the villain Mr Logan who uses the hijacks and uses the Seaview to steal the Mona Lisa. Broadcast in 1965, Mr Logan is described as a genius with the stealing of Mona Lisa being his latest scheme. 14 years later in 1979 Doctor Who presented its own plot of the theft of the Mona Lisa in City of Death with the villain behind this Scaroth also described as a genius. GB Atwater is superb as Logan in his passion for the Mona Lisa even killing one of his own to protect it.
I was sad to discover afterwards that Henry Kulky (Chief Curley Jones) had four days after this episode was aired but is still seen in subsequent episodes. Very tragic as he was a fun character to see.

The Human Computer: Season 1, Episode 23, season 1, episode 24. Lee is alone on the Seaview as part of a test in which it is under the control of a computer but found an enemy agent is also on board. Very good suspense of an episode in which Lee has to face off this adversary in an otherwise empty Seaview.

The Traitor: Season 1 finale on the original transmission order, Season 1, episode 28. Guest stars George Sanders as the villain Fenton. Nelson is forced to do Fenton’s bidding after he held Nelson’s sister hostage. The sister is played by Susan Flannery and is credited for playing The Sister. With a credit like that it could easily be misconstrued that she was playing a nun. However she wasn’t Nelson’s sister but a government agent posing as her as part of a plan for Nelson to infiltrate Fenton’s organisation. Very good how this all played out with Nelson pretending to be a traitor.

The Saboteur: Season 1, Episode 24 on the transmission order, episode 1, episode 26 on the DVD order. On the DVD order this episode comes after The Traitor and both episodes have an apparent betrayal within Seaview. In The Traitor it was Nelson while The Saboteur it was Crane. However The Traitor has Nelson being what it says in the episode title under duress because his sister was held hostage while The Saboteur has Crane acting as a traitor due to brainwashing by the People’s Republic. The Saboteur is a superb episode with Crane’s programmed betrayal culminating in flushing out a People’s Republic agent in the Seaview. Neat plot device about the radio on Seaview.

Cradle of the Deep: Season 1, Episode 25 on the original transmission order, season 1, episode 27 on the DVD order. Thrilling episode in which the Seaview goes very deep where no other sea vessels has ever return from. Add to the tension of this is an officer whose brother was on one of the doomed vessels who is causing disruption in order to prevent the Seaview coming to the same fate and a monster on board.

The Creature: Season 1, Episode 28 on the original transmission order, season 1, episode 30 on the DVD order. Guest stars Leslie Nielsen. Nielsen plays an unstable commander named Adams who is on-board the Seaview to go after the said creature. A truly superb performance by Nielsen as Adams proved troublesome to the Seaview crew in pursuit of the creature.
