The unasked and unanswered question here is... why would it be a good thing to a Trek fan for DW to fail? Who threw Who and Trek into a cage and forced them to battle to the death? I must have missed that. For what reason could someone get it into his head, however tiny, that Trek and Who are somehow in "competition" with each other? Are they up for the same time slot and no one told me?
Why wouldn't it be trek plus who, joined in battle against the mundane drivel like cop shows, cop forensics shows, reality shows, etc.? I'm missing that knee-jerk competitive gene, I guess. That was probably a good survival characteristic in cave man days, but it's a little on the unnecessary side, now.

Who Boosts SCI FI Ratings
The new updated Doctor Who boosted SCI FI Channel's ratings on Friday nights by double digits, the network reported. The new version of Doctor Who, produced by the BBC, wrapped its first season on SCI FI on June 9.
Doctor Who averaged a 1.3 household rating and 1.5 million total viewers in its 9 p.m. Friday timeslot, a 44 percent increase in ratings and a 54 percent increase in viewership over the same timeslot in the second quarter last year.
In key demographics, Doctor Who averaged 778,000 viewers aged 18-49, a 57 percent increase over 2005, and 942,000 viewers aged 25-54, a 56 percent increase.
Executive-produced by Russell T. Davies and Julie Gardner, the 13-episode hourlong drama starred Christopher Eccleston and Billie Piper.

For the record I'm a fan of both Star Trek and Doctor Who and I see no problems in appreciating both franchises.

I've just seen some Star Trek episodes myself recently and I think they're quite good. Also, why there should be any contest between the two shows is beyond me. Just goes to show how narrow minded some people are, unfortunate isn't it. Also, why wasn't this thread locked?

Also, why wasn't this thread locked? No idea. The more major concern was dealing with the poster than the actual post, and the thread seems to have reached a somewhat more civil tone than I guess was intended by the thread starter, if it gets nasty again I'll close it.

I'm a huge fan of both these series and comparing them is ridiculous because they're so different.

On the whole I think it's a shame that some people just want to create trouble for everyone else. I just ignore it and get on with my life, do that and they soon get bored. Anyway, just because you like one thing doesn't mean you can't like another.

Hello all,
I'm a new viewer in the US and just wanted to respond quickly to the US ratings topic here. My husband is from Eastbourne, and grew up watching Doctor Who. I myself remember people watching it in the 1970s, when there were far fewer channels than there are today. I can't say for certain, but my guess is that in the 1980s the US following drifted largely into the "fandom" world of the Sci-Fi/fantasy afficianados. It wasn't so popular in the mainstream, but was rather intensely popular among those fans, and continues to be. Testiment to this is the number of former Doctors who have been and continue to be guests at the various conventions. I personally remember a college friend in about 1990 who ran around campus with a reeeeally long scarf . . .
In any event, I wanted to note that while the show has apparently been running on SciFi for several months now, my husband and I have not noticed it until now. Why? Because the only two channels we currently get time to watch are ComedyCentral (for our Daily Show/Colbert Report needs) and BBC America (for the real news). It wasn't until BBC America began showing it that we were even aware of the new series. Now we're TiVoing both, which leads to a disconcerting jumble of the 9th and 10th Doctors. But never mind.
My point is that while the show may never be a smash in the US ratings, it will have a very devoted following amongst those who loved the show of old, and very likely new viewers who may even be drawn to the older show (re-runs of which have been cropping up occasionally on SciFi, like they're testing the waters to see if they'll catch back on).
Cheers, Jennie

Welcome to the boards. One thing I'll say is that I too never really expected massive ratings for Doctor Who in the United States (there's too much other rubbish many other programmes on over there so, it's bound to face competion). But, what fans it does have are loyal. P.S. These are precisely the types of post the thread starter didn't want. ;D

Is it true? Is the SciFi channel really showing old episodes of the classic series? Anyone know when?

I think it was SciFi. All I know is I was setting the TiVo to tape and one of the offered episodes was from the '70s. . . I haven't seen it on the queue since, though. I'll let you know if I see one again. Jennie *edit* Okay, sorry for the tease. Turns out it's on Maryland Public Television (WMPT) on Sunday mornings (Midnight Saturday) at 12am. Sunday 24 December is "Robots of Death" and Sunday 31 December is "Talons of Weng-Chiang" (both 1977, Tom Baker). www.mpt.org/schedule/series.cfm?series_id=2531J

I just think it's a bit rich when someone who views original star trek as good tv criticises dr who for bad effects and long scarves. I mean i've seen better effects in Laurel & Hardy than original star trek.

Yeah but to be fair the original star trek was inovative. It`s just the constant spin offs that killed it and it stopped being sci fi and just morality tales and soap operas. I mean they`re wandering about in Pyjamas with dustbusters !!! To each their own. The only one that annoys me was babylon 5 to be honest. Blatant rip off of Lord Of The Rings.
It`s funny though theres a lot of old entertainment from the 80`s being remade , Battlestar Gallactica, DR Who, Quantum leap, Superman, Batman and more I can`t remember but in short fantasy, sci fi and non cheapo makeover stuff.
Oh yeah and I don`t think Dr Who`s done an episode that reaches the depths of spocks brain yet lololol
