of course his first series was appalling while the next two produced some wonderful stories

I love the 7th Doctor! The first serial I ever saw was Ghost Light and afterwards I just wanted to see more and more. It a shame that the show was cancelled when the Sylvester McCoy was at his peak  Dom |

I don`t think the first series was that bad, it was watchable at least. But I`ve gotta agree it was pitiful to cancel it when the stories were getting a lot better and the doctor`s character was getting a lot more mysterious. It`s even more annoying when you consider it was axed because Micheal Grade didn`t like doctor who and sci fi. When you look at the crap his uncle put out , you`ve gotta think pot meet kettle

I agree. The 7th Doctor was the first Doctor that I really got me into the show. My friend, who has been a fan for many years, got me to watch Remembrance of the Daleks. I have been hooked ever since. Sylvest McCoy will always be my favorite Doctor. And it is too bad that his run was cut off so quickly.

McCoy is either my second favorite Doctor or tied for first (I go back and forth on the "issue"). It takes a good script for him to really shine, but when he does, no other Doctor even comes close. "Ghost Light" is one of my favorite serials, and he even makes "Time and the Rani" almost bearable.

I agree.
I sometimes feel that some of the later doctors were saddled with some pretty lame story ideas and scripts.
Having said that, some of these 'lame' stories come out pretty well in written form, as I'm discovering at the moment. I've just read Dragonfire and it really is a ripping yarn.
I suspect that, particularly in McCoy's reign, stories that should have been 4 (or even 5) episodes were 'forced' to fit into a three-episode format, and they suffered badly for it.
I'm not sure if McCoy was the best Doctor because they were all good in their own way (yes, ALL of them), but I agree that he is certainly underrated.

I'm always disappointed when I hear others jump onto the "McCoy was crap" bandwagon. I thought he was a great Doctor. Not alot of those people take into account that his first year was written without him in mind -- so rather than get into his "new" character right away, he was forced to feel his way through those stories, until the following season when the Seventh Doctor's character really began to grow. When the series was cancelled, the show was finally starting to gain notice again (McCoy's oft-used analogy about it taking time for a ship to turn around is a perfect one). And considering the talk about what was planned for the Seventh Doctor's fourth season, it would have been fascinating to see how McCoy performed in it!

I think McCoy was lucky or at least luckier than Colin Baker in that he had some d**n good stories during his era. Thats not taking anything away from him or saying his run was carried by the stories as he gave an excellent portrayal. But his stories seemed to be better written

It doesn't help when his first compainion Mel is only good for screaming and when you have stories such as Paradise Towers and The Happiness Patrol which are 'below par' IMO.
By Himself SM's Doctor is unique and quite a character!

I never liked mel. She was to goody-goody for my taste. She hampered the Sixth and Seventh Doctor's in their stories. But enough bashing mel. I liked how they gave the Seventh Doctor some of his mystery back in Remembrace of the Daleks and on.

The 7th Doctor has got to be one of my all time favorites and there really are some great storys like Remembrance of the Daleks and the curse of fenric. I was a little disapointed with some of them namely The Happiness Patrol and Delta and the Bannermen but apart from that theres nothing really wrong with the 7th Doctor as all Doctors have there bad storys need i mention the Long Game.

you can go worse than the long game, theres boom town, WWIII for the 9th, and of course the 4th had his fair share of stinkers, underworld (eeww)

Seriously though Bonnie Langford was pretty much hated before then for the same reasons Mel was hated. I don`t think there was much acting involved, she more or less portrayed herself. |
