I do miss the NA's - they were what got me into Doctor Who in the first place, believe it or not. Some haven't aged very well at all but some are as good as they were when they first came out. I still prefer the vast majority of them to the vast majority of the 8th Doctor's books. The only problem I had with them was that the Seventh Doctor didn't always act or sound like the Seventh Doctor, more like a hyper realised version of the portrayal from Fenric. Nothing wrong with that but it ignored a lot of Sylvester's acting traits. His Doctor was dark and scheming but he also put on a veneer of comedy (spoon playing, rhyming, his sweet rapport with Ace). Quite often he is played super dark in the NA's, with no trace of his sweet batty nature. He does have some surrealistic humour toned stories, but that's not what he portrayed on screen, was it? Lucifer Rising is excellent for it's Seventh Doctor as it gets his dark side, his moody side (i.e. the TVM) and also his comedic spoon playing side. It gets so much right then the Doctor shoots Legion with a gun. Just so not the Seventh Doctor at all. I doubt Syl would have played it, much was his penchant for his Doctor not using guns. So not even that wonderful book could nail Doc 7 properly, but it would have done if not for the gun! The Big Finish audios do well at capturing both sides to the character - his darkness and his comedy. It's just a shame the NA's never really could. But they're still excellent. It grieves me that I will never read So Vile a Sin because it's so expensive, and it's a shame that even Russell T doesn't mind writing them out of existence a la Family of Blood. Saying that, the TV version was sublime and David Tennant played it better than even my favourite Doctor, Sylvester, could have done. So I guess that can be excused. Still wouldn't mind a new print run of the NA's though. -Jeremiah Ecks, who wants to read Cold Fusion, So Vile a Sin, Time's Crucible, Lungbarrow and Scales of Injustice - not all are available as an E-Book but is glad some of them are. Now to just print them.
