berry, you're right about possibility of copy protection on DVDs but tapes are obsolete anyway because of many technical advantages of the DVDs which non only have better quality but also the possibility to have multi-sound-tracks so you can have commentaries but also different languages and this is great for people who don't live in anglosaxon countries and could get easily only dubbed tapes while local DVD editions always carry at least English audio track for movies / TV shows produced in English. What I found quite surprising (in an unfortunate way) is the unreliability of DVD recordings versus VHS recordings. I never ever had one single malfunction related to dozens of VHS recordings. I have finalized about 20 DVD recording discs and here is a summary of random problems so far:
1) one disc had to be discarded because it "can neither be read nor written to" -- I put it in the recorder and after formatting, that is what it said
2) another disc was "protected" and couldn't be written to -- once again, it was formatted and when I tried to record to it, that is what it said. I protect RW discs as I go along after a recording is made, but I hadn't done that yet to this one
3) third disc was unusable
4) a couple of times, recording just stopped and I had to redo the recording from the beginning
etc, etc, etc
I don't think the recorder is at fault because I made too many good ones. But the failure/defective rate is high compared to VHS tapes where I never had any problems. I do like the title capability where you can document your segments and immediately start up playback at that area by going to that title. But the reliability of the DVDs is not something I would want to risk my life on (i.e. I will bet my life that this brand new DVD will work perfectly -- I could do that with VHS tapes).
