Caroline John who had played Third Doctor companion Liz Shaw has passed away.
Born in 1940, Caroline John played Dr Elizabeth "Liz" Shaw in season 7 of Doctor Who in 1970, the first season for Third Doctor Jon Pertwee.
Caroline John made her first appearance in the season 7 opener Spearhead from Space which also marked Pertwee's debut as the Third Doctor. Caroline John made her last regular appearance as Liz three stories later in the season 7 closer Inferno and was no "goodbye Doctor" scene for Liz with her departure being mentioned in the season 8 opener Terror of the Autons.
Caroline John would return as Liz in 1983 in the twentieth anniversary story The Five Doctors but this version of Liz was a phantom.Caroline John would return as the real Liz in the 1990s in the 30th anniversary skit Dimensions In Time and in the spin-off video series P.R.O.B.E. P.R.O.B.E. (Preternatural Research Bureau) was a government agency in which Liz was an investigator.
Also of interest to Doctor Who fans she played Detective Chief Inspector Diana Sellars in The Stranger video Breach of the Peace.
Like many surviving actors of the "classic" series she appeared in the audio world of Doctor Who from Big Finish Productions starting with a guest stint in the Seventh Doctor story Dust Breeding playing Madame Salvadori before eventually returning as Liz starting with The Companion Chronicles: The Blue Tooth.
Her work outside of the Doctor Who universe included 1982 serial of The Hound of the Baskervilles which starred Fourth Doctor Tom Baker as Sherlock Holmes and produced and script edited respectively by Doctor Who veterans Barry Letts and Terrance thingys who had performed the same capacity in Doctor Who including Caroline John's original time in Doctor Who, the 1985 movie of Santa Claus, the Poirot episode Problem at Sea, an episode of The House of Eliott a series co-created by fellow companion Jean Marsh and in a small role as Sam's grandmother in the movie Love Actually which had featured Comic Relief Doctors Rowan Atkinson and Doctor Hugh Grant.
Caroline John died on June 5 2012 at the age of 71.
Her passing came at a time of the release of the movie Prometheus which had as its lead character called Elizabeth Shaw who may or may not have been named after Caroline John's Doctor Who character.
